Message from CEO

Hello Members,

Another wet and dreary week, but we have now passed the Winter Solstice, so the count down to warmer and blue skies has now begun.

Business Wodonga has some exciting programs and announcements coming up very soon so I encourage everyone to stay tuned! It's going to be a lot of fun and I can't wait to share it with you. In the meantime, I will give you a hint. It involves games, laughing, some friendly competition and some good old fashioned wackiness!

Wednesday evening, I was pleased to be able to attend Business After Hours, hosted by Kirinari Community Services, where we learned about the valuable work they do with people under the NDIS scheme. The venue was warm, open and inviting and the food was wonderful, all prepared in their on-site café.

Best of all, this really was a great evening for networking, meeting new people in business and some friendly faces that I had not seen much of over the past twenty-seven months. The room had a real vibe of happiness and positivity.

The next Business After Hours is hosted here in Wodonga by the City of Wodonga at Hyphen. If you have not yet been inside this community facility and everything that it has to offer to residents and businesses, then this is your opportunity to do so.  It really is an amazing community asset, but best of all it will be filled with people who are like-minded to yourself.  So c’mon, it is time to start getting out and networking again!

Save the date, July 27 and book today via our events page or via this link.

Lastly, for those in our footy tipping competition this week, it’s another Spot Prize weekend for the top rated tipster this round. We will reveal the prize on Monday, it’s worth winning, so my best advice is not to discount Essendon.

-Graham.

Member Spotlight

Dysons has grown from humble beginnings to be one of Victoria's most diverse and successful family owned and operated brands.

After serving in WW2 English immigrant Laurie Dyson bought a bus business from his old boss who had recently passed away - four "clapped out buses, bits of bombs" as he later noted. The year was 1952 and Dysons was born as a company.

Over the years this family business served the people of Melbourne's north, starting in Reservoir and East Preston before spreading out to cover most of the northern and eastern suburbs.

During this time Dysons developed a reputation for delivering friendly and reliable service, and being a strong and active member of the local communities they served.

The Wodonga depot operates 13 local town services covering Wodonga, Baranduda, West, East and South Albury operating six days a week.

Support for Regional Victoria

LaunchVic has proudly supported the development of regional startup ecosystems across Victoria. However, there is more work to do - only 3% of founders identify as regional despite 25% of Victoria’s population living outside Melbourne. LaunchVic wants to build a vibrant regional Victorian startup community by helping early-stage ecosystem development activities in regional centres.

LaunchVic is inviting Expressions of Interest from New and Existing organisations recommending the areas of programming required to grow their local startup ecosystem with the objectives of:

  • Encourage startup ecosystem development activities in regional Victoria;
  • Encourage people to consider a pathway into the startup ecosystem
  • Increase the number of early-stage startups being created in regional Victoria.

Programs currently funded by LaunchVic that operate in regional Victoria and are seeking re-funding and consortia proposals will be considered.

The successful EOI applicants will be invited to submit a detailed Request for Proposal (RFP). Successful RFP applicants will receive funding of between $50,000 and $300,000 (exclusive of GST) over 1-2 years. Funds can be used for Operating Costs.

Digital Jobs

Backing your business to find great people

As digital technologies drive the future of business, the demand for digital skills is growing rapidly.

To help meet this demand, the Victorian Government is building a new talent pool of great people with digital skills.

The Digital Jobs program helps experienced mid-career Victorians transition into digital careers. Candidates undertake 12 weeks of free digital skills training, before being placed in a digital job for 12 weeks.

Victorian businesses are invited to provide work placements for our talented career changers. Participating businesses will also gain access to the broader talent pool to find new recruits for digital jobs.

We’re backing you to build your digital capability, and providing a cost-effective way to bring new skills and new talent into your business.

Join ANZ, Microsoft, Salesforce, Siemens and other top Victorian employers by hosting an intern.

Winter Covid Restrictions

Protecting yourself and others during winter

As winter is here, it is important that we keep doing the things that keep us all safe.

Ensure you are up to date with your COVID-19 vaccines and that you get vaccinated against influenza.

Masks are strongly recommended in shared indoor settings, if you can’t physically distance or you are with those more vulnerable to COVID-19. Improve ventilation by opening doors and windows, using fans or purifiers, and gathering outside where possible.

Face masks are still required for everyone aged 8 and above in some locations, including on public transport, rideshares and taxis, and in sensitive settings such as hospitals and care facilities. They are also required by household contacts in quarantine who meet the criteria for leaving home.

Secure Your Email

Cybercrime is on the rise; don’t let a cybercriminal take advantage of you this tax time!

As part of the Australian Cyber Security Centre’s (ACSC) Act Now Stay Secure Email Security campaign, listen to a panel discussion on the threat of business email compromise this tax time and how to keep email accounts secure.

Hear from Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), the Australian Federal Police (AFP), Australian Taxation Office (ATO), the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (ASBFEO) and the Australian Banking Association (ABA), as we discuss how individuals and small businesses can improve their email security to protect themselves, their business, employees, and clients from an email security incident.

With access to email accounts, cybercriminals can steal sensitive and financial information, or commit fraud by sending emails and invoices, pretending to be businesses to scam their contacts.

You will learn about the support available, including the ACSC’s Email Security step-by-step guides and the ATO’s eInvoicing for business, as well as hear from the AFP on the significant economic disruption and loss caused by business email compromise, and ABA’s and ABFEO’s advocacy and support services.

  • Date: Monday 27 June 2022
  • Time: 9:30 am to 10:30 am AEST

Facilitator: Derek Bopping, First Assistant Director-General, Cyber Engagement and Access, Australian Cyber Security Centre
