Bowls NZ Champ of Champ SinglesBowls Hastings Linda Ralph from Carlton Cornwall played terrific bowls throughout the Women's Singles tournament. Winning her qualifying rounds against opponents from Stokes Valley, Central, Whānganui & Taireri, Linda progressed to the semi-final, where she defeated Amy McIlroy 21-14. In the Final, Linda was up against Tanya Wheeler from Martinborough. It was a great battle between these two. Each player was delivering winning bowls as taking control of the lead jostled between them. It came down to the last end. Tanya gained crucial points to get back in front to take the championship win and her first NZ title, 21-19. Congratulations, Tanya & well done Linda for such a great effort. In the Men's Singles, it was a different path for Les Brown from Howick. The results for qualifying rounds against the champs from Waipukurau, Waimate & Petone did not go his way. However, well done to you Les for representing Howick Bowls and the Auckland region. We hope both Les and Linda enjoyed the competitive spirit during the championship. This season we moved to Te Atatu Peninsula to utilise the new artificial green. Around 35 players enjoyed the pristine green and sunny winter weather conditions. With a supporting cast of new coaches and past pupils, Peter and Robyn had a lot of helpers to make the opening day a great success. We were rapted to see so many new faces, both players and coaches. Coaching is from 9:00 am to midday and any new or 1-5 Year bowlers are welcome to come along to attend. Winter coaching season finishes with competitions between all the zone modules. West Zone is the current Canoe and Campi champions and will be doing their very best to continue with their success rate over the last few seasons. From our clubsNew Life MembersPt Chevalier Bowling Club At our recent AGM, two members were elevated to Life Membership status in recognition of their outstanding service to the club. Congratulations to Ian and Les on their well-deserved honour. Ian McKenna needs no introduction. He has been an outstanding member since joining the Pt Chevalier Bowling Club in 2006. He is our current Club President, he has held this role for over t0 years. Known for the hearty welcome he gives to everyone who comes to the club, Ian has made Pt Chevalier the envy of players throughout Auckland, His never-ending support of our bowlers is always commented on around the bowling greens. He is there, barracking for our players, whether it be a first-year playing in their first competition or our Premier interclub teams. No matter what job needs doing, Ian is there, pitching in to help—setting up the greens at the weekend, helping with painting, gardening, as well as behind the bar. Ian was our volunteer bar person on a Tuesday evening for a whopping six years straight. Les Hunter has been a member of the club for 30-plus years. Les has been the backbone of the club, working tirelessly in the background. He has been on the committee and had many roles over the years. Currently our Vice President, Les has uncomplainingly dealt with all the thankless jobs which no one else wants to do. He has taken on the Hallyburton Johnstone Trust delegate role and has dealt with the Public Trust issue, as well as being involved in the day-to-day operations of the club. You can always rely on him to follow up on what he says he will do. Although not out on the green a lot, Les willingly steps into teams when needed and is always a regular on Friday nights.
