Camden Haven High School has enjoyed, over many years, an outstanding reputation not only within our local school community but in the wider community and across the state and country, for the achievements and success of our students in many fields of endeavour. I have been proud to be associated with the school, our students, and our families. Our local member has delivered two Hansard speeches in the NSW Parliament commending myself and the school as well as numerous speeches praising individual students and student groups for their personal bests in academic achievements, cultural events, STEM, shows and sport, over time, including 2022. Achievements for which all of us, associated with the school, can applaud, rejoice and be proud.
Whilst the majority of our students continue to uphold our Core Values of Respect, Responsibility and Do Your Best and follow our Six Expected Behaviours, as students have over many years, there appears to be a small core who are not being compliant and are placing themselves, as well as others, at risk of harm.
I took the opportunity to speak with the whole school this week about our increasing number of unacceptable behaviours and incidents that are not part of the ethos of the school. This includes Vaping – bringing this illegal contraband to school and selling or sharing with others; graffiti/tagging; fighting; using mobile phones to film and distribute vision of others. All of these activities detract from the main purpose of our school, which is to provide a safe and caring environment for learning and to maximise the personal learning outcomes of all our students.
The school has adopted “We Care” as our mantra for all we undertake and where every student is known, valued, and cared for. I have asked that all of our staff, teaching and non-teaching, as well as students who deplore these actions make a stand against these inappropriate and disruptive behaviours, which are diminishing and damaging to all of us. I ask that you our parents’ and families also support us in our efforts to rally all our school community and help us restore our outstanding reputation.
One of the main ways we can move forward is to ensure all our students feel they belong. This can be achieved by being in uniform, many of those who are committing these wrong doings are not and are repeat offenders. Every new student to enrol this year, has received a school jacket/jumper, as we have done for some years now. Any family needing support for other items of uniform, book/resources/ subject fees should contact the Year Adviser, Deputy Principal, or myself.
Moving forward there are and will continue to be consequences for continued poor/unacceptable/inappropriate/violent behaviour as set out within the guidelines provided by the Department of Education. I believe I have sent a clear message to the school, and I will follow through to ensure our school continues as it has in the past to build on success and achievement and provide the best facilities and opportunities in a kind and nurturing environment for all.

Congratulations Scarlett!!

Congratulations to Scarlett for selection in trials for state touch

Congratulations to Scarlett who was selected in the Greater Northern CHS Touch team to play and trial at the state carnival on the 28-30 May in Albury for a position in the NSW CHS touch team.
She performed extremely well in challenging conditions. The greater Northern team had a 1-1 draw in round one against the central coast, lost the next two games and won our fourth game on the last day.
From here, Scarlett will progress to the North Coast Cross Country Carnival where she has a very good chance to progress through to the State Carnival at Eastern Creek in Sydney. We wish her the best of luck.  Well done Scarlett on your sporting achievements thus far in 2022.

Congratulations to Tayte, Reeve & Scarlett who represented CHHS and Lower North Coast in trialling for the Greater North Coast Touch team.
Each team played three games - the girls then had a fourth game (possibles & probables). The boys played well and impressed with limited opportunity to showcase their full abilities. Scarlett was successful in gaining selection and represented North Coast in Milperra on 28-30 May in trialling for the NSW CHS team.

Science and Engineering Challenge 2022

Well done to our students who competed in the recent Science and Engineering Challenge. Our students combined with Hastings Secondary College to create a combined team. Throughout the day the students worked through a round robin of super fun challenges including bridge building, earthquake resistant towers, coding, making a robot arm, wiring a city and making a water wheel. At the end of proceeding our team achieve 3rd place, narrowly missing 2nd by just a few points!
Ultimately it was great day, with our students having loads of fun and gaining some valuable experience. Big thanks to Rotary, the University of Newcastle and everyone else involved in providing this great opportunity!
On the left we can see Max, Tayte and Cooper coding and decoding messages.
On the right Max, Tayte and Cooper are developing their robot hand - theirs was scored best on the day!

Our Year 12 Word-Wizards Mentoring our Year 10's

This week eleven of our incredible Year 12 English students volunteered their time to help Year 10 English students who are learning how to write essays. The Year 12s acted as mature guides for the younger students over two lessons, assisting with their essay structure and thesis statements. The Year 10s were super excited and grateful to have student mentors to help them navigate this important skill. A huge thank you to our Year 12 word-wizards!

CHHS Book Club

This week our Book Club members were excited to receive their very first club novel that they voted on two weeks ago! With it, they received a bookmark, a club sticker, and three secret packets to be opened upon reaching a certain page in the book! As a group they got to open the packet for page 3, which contained tea (partly because the character makes tea on page 3, and partly because we all know that books are best enjoyed with a cup of tea in hand!) What will the packet contain for page 16 I wonder…?

CHALC Work Experience

From Week 2 of Term 2, the CHALC students have been attending 1 day of work experience every week. These work experiences were tailored to students' interests and future pathways. Both teachers have visited the workplaces over the last few weeks to get a sneak peek of what students have been up to. Reports from all employers have been extremely positive, with them commenting on the punctuality, politeness, and excellent work readiness skills of all our students. We are extremely proud of our students, and look forward to what their choices are for Term 3.

Mindful Moments

Mindful Moments

Living mindfully has been found to increase wellbeing and can have profound effects on you and those around you.  It has been shown to improve concentration, emotional intelligence, and the ability to relate to others and oneself with kindness, acceptance, and compassion. If you or your child is suffering from anxiety, depression, low self-esteem or worried about their future. It is easy to make mindfulness part of your life.

Positive Affirmations

This week
Start the day with a positive affirmation
Affirmations are powerful positive statements that aim to direct your conscious and subconscious mind, challenging previously held unhealthy and negative thinking pattern. When they are spoken with conviction, they can alter your thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and behaviours. When used intentionally to create change, they can help project you into your achievements. There are many apps but a quick google search will give you a free one each day. You can stick it on the fridge or read it aloud to your family members.
