The department of community health and family medicine has a long history of providing primary care services in Alachua County, with a special focus on underserved populations who live east of Main Street and beyond Waldo Road.

The department comprises 50 faculty members who have dedicated their careers to making health care accessible for the Gainesville community.

The UF College of Medicine’s human resources department welcomes a new director next week and has expanded a number of its programs as it works to elevate the role of human resources across the college. The College of Medicine HR department, which includes a team of 15 staff members, operates separately from the UF Office of Human Resource Services but maintains a close working relationship with the university’s central office.

Collaboration between teams leads to new blood transfusion protocol

Craniofacial surgeon Jessica Ching, M.D., teamed up with colleagues in pediatric neurosurgery and anesthesiology to develop a novel blood management protocol that spurred new guidelines for clinical practice implemented across the system. The protocol outlines a means to save any blood lost by the patient during surgery by reprocessing it and transfusing it.

Two generations of alums give back to future PAs

Nearly 30 years to the day after Brian Palmer and his late former wife graduated from UF as PAs in 1979, their daughter, Jillian Johnson, completed the same program at the UF School of Physician Assistant Studies in 2009. Now the family is giving back to the institution that provided them with so many opportunities and supporting the next generation of Gator PAs by establishing the Palmer-Johnson Family PA Scholarship Fund.

Strategic planning in full swing at College of Medicine

With focus group meetings completed, the dean’s office is now in the analysis stage of the strategic planning process. The team will determine themes and ideas that will be the framework around which the college develops and initiates projects under each of the seven pillars.
