[Immaculate Conception Church, Lihue]

We are all very painfully aware of a host of Lazaruses at our doorstep. We can hardly walk or drive anywhere in town without seeing homeless individuals or a homeless encampment. We may have various reactions to this situation, but I do think we are all concerned in one way or another. I am actually very impressed with how many people are reaching out to the homeless through feeding programs, shelters, and rehabilitation programs of various kinds. So, while I know there is much more we can all do, I am not sure we could be accused of totally ignoring the Lazaruses at our door, unlike the rich man in the gospel.

However, not all our benefits and blessings are material, and I think we also need to allow this gospel to challenge us to see if we are sharing the great spiritual blessings we receive in our Catholic faith with others, or whether we are simply ignoring them and letting them starve to death on the lack of spiritual guidance and joy that comes from us. From Home to Rome, Kalaupapa Takes Main Stage

Kalaupapa was in the spotlight this month amid a flurry of activity centered around pending and proposed visits to the remote peninsula on Molokai.

On Sept. 8, state and national agencies announced the return of public tours in Kalaupapa, which were shut down five years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The site of Hawaii’s settlement for Hansen’s disease (also known as leprosy) patients — where Father Damien de Veuster and Mother Marianne Cope ministered to residents who were forcibly isolated from their families due to the disease, which is now curable — is overseen by the state Department of Health and has been a national historical park under the National Park Service since 1980. The agencies had previously worked with patient-residents to bring visitors to Kalaupapa to experience its history and legacy. Read more...

From the Office for Social Ministry

“Whenever we encounter a poor person, we cannot look away, for that would prevent us from encountering the face of the Lord Jesus. In the poor, we can touch the flesh of Christ.” - Pope Francis, Message for the First World Day of the Poor, 2017

As the Church enthusiastically celebrates the final months of the Jubilee Year of Hope, we are called to always remember that mercy and hope walk hand in hand. Mercy opens our eyes to Christ in those who suffer. Hope strengthens our resilience to build a future of justice and compassion. Pope Francis emphasized this when he established the First World Day of the Poor in 2017 during his “Misericordia et Misera” message at the end of 2016 Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. Now his successor Pope Leo XIV, has carried that vision forward in his 2025 Message for the Ninth World Day of the Poor, reminding all: “The poor are creative subjects who challenge us to find novel ways of living out the Gospel today. Christian hope must move beyond comforting words to real responsibility and structural change to uplift the poor.”

That vision and mission of service with those in need was embodied anew in Honolulu this September. For the first time in history, the Knights and Ladies Auxiliary of Peter Claver—the largest Black Catholic lay organization in the United States—opened a unit outside the continental U.S. On September 12, 2025, at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, Unit 419 of the Knights and Ladies Auxiliary of Peter Claver was officially established here and they named their first unit in Hawaii after St. Damien de Veuster and St. Marianne Cope of Moloka‘i. Talks for Youth and Adults

Mondays and Thursdays in October at 7:00 p.m.

All are welcome to join these talks for youth and adults which are an announcement of the Good News where Christ has an answer to the difficult situations we experience and gives us the possibility of love and forgiveness. This will be presented by the missionary team of the Neocatechumenal Way in Hawai’i: Jonathan & Nazarena Stenger with their seven children, Fr. John Wadeson, and Paulo Da Mata a seminarian for the Diocese of Brooklyn.

The Neocatechumenal Way is a post-baptismal catechumenate for adults to help people grow in their faith by living with the Scriptures and liturgy so as to experience it in small communities within the structure of the Parish. Pope Saint John Paul II wrote in a letter: “I acknowledge the Neocatechumenal Way as an itinerary of Catholic formation, valid for our society and for our times.”

For more information, please contact Jonathan and Nazarena Stenger at (808) 268-3993.

Saint of the Week

Saint Thérèse of Lisieux
1873–1897
Memorial - October 1

For more than a century, Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, also known as “The Little Flower,” has captivated countless minds and hearts. Her simple and pure heart burned with a deep love for our Lord, and that love overflowed into the lives of many. She daily inspired those who knew her, and she continues to inspire those who read her story.

Marie Françoise-Thérèse Martin was born on January 2, 1873, in Rue Saint-Blaise, Alençon, France, to Marie-Azélie Guérin (Zélie), and Louis Martin, a jeweler and watchmaker. Her mother, who often called Thérèse her “little angel,” died from breast cancer only a few months before Thérèse’s fifth birthday. Read more...
