Who do you think you are?

You might be surprised to discover who you really are. As we come together in Annunciation Church to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its dedication, we will be blessing its newly refurbished tabernacle. During this time of Eucharistic Revival in our country, we are trying to rediscover the great gift that the Eucharist is to us, so it is very appropriate to bless this tabernacle. We know that it is a sacred place in which the Body of the risen Jesus, who makes himself physically present to us in the Eucharist, will be reserved. From the tabernacle, the Body of the Lord will be available to the sick and the dying, and for adoration and prayer outside of Mass. It is a special place to which we genuflect when we come into the presence of the Lord. We treat it with great reverence, not so much for itself, but for what is in it, the risen Lord Jesus, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. Read more...

HOPE Services Blesses Its First Affordable Rental Housing for Seniors on Hawaii island

Interior and exterior views of the Sacred Hearts Affordable Housing Project.

By Patrick Downes
Hawaii Catholic Herald

Hawaii Island has a brand-new neighborhood in Pahoa named after the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It’s small, just 12 houses — studios for seniors experiencing homelessness. But it is breaking new ground.

The project is the first permanent affordable rental housing community for seniors in the island’s Puna district, the first developed by HOPE Services Hawaii, an affiliate of the Catholic Church, and the first constructed as HPM Building Supply’s innovative HalePlus prefabricated modular homes.

Blessed on Nov. 8 by vicar general Msgr. Gary Secor at a dedication ceremony attended by about 100 people, it’s called the Sacred Heart Affordable Housing Project, a development of locally-made factory-built homes and an accompanying resource center. It sits on 14.5 acres bought from the Catholic Church adjacent to the Sacred Heart Shelter, a village of micro-units built next to Sacred Heart Church to house those displaced by the 2018 Kilauea eruption. Sacred Hearts School Sends Their Thanksgiving

From the Office for Social Ministry

As we begin this holiday season with Thanksgiving and Giving Tuesday, Bishop Larry Silva is sharing a special video message of gratitude featuring the uplifting story of Sacred Hearts School which belongs to the Lahaina parish of Maria Lanakila. The video can be found HERE on YouTube or on the Office for Social Ministry website at www.officeforsocialministry.org.

The Diocesan “giving-thanks” video is an unscripted, from the heart narrative of faith, resilience and aloha as the Sacred Hearts school is rising from the ashes like a beacon of hope beaming from their temporary classroom tents. The video beautifully opens with young school children, teachers and parents singing a song of gratitude with choreographed hand movements expressing “thanks be to God” in various languages spoken here in Hawaii. It shows how the parish school has embraced its mission of providing learning opportunities not only for the students who were previously enrolled, but also for many from the public schools which were entirely consumed by the fire. The Sacred Hearts School opened its doors to provide impacted keiki a safe learning space which incorporates the values of the Gospel faith in its heart. Read more...

Saint of the Week

Saint Andrew the Apostle
c. 5/10–c. 60/80
Feast – November 30

Saint Andrew, one of the Twelve Apostles, was most likely born in Bethsaida, just north of the Sea of Galilee, in what is today the Golan Heights. As a young man, he and his brother, Peter, worked as fishermen on the Sea of Galilee. John’s Gospel reveals that Andrew was a disciple of Saint John the Baptist prior to his encounter with Jesus. This shows that Andrew was searching and took his faith seriously. As is recorded in John 1:35–42, Andrew and another disciple were listening to John preach in the desert. As they listened to him, John the Baptist saw Jesus in the distance and prophetically exclaimed, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” After Andrew and the other disciple inquired of Jesus where He was staying, Jesus invited them to follow Him by saying, “Come, and you will see.” They then spent the rest of the day with Jesus. Andrew is, therefore, the first of the Apostles to be called and to respond to that call. For that reason, the Greek Church calls Andrew the “Protokletos,” meaning, “the first called.” Read more...
