Hi ,

As you get ready for the upcoming Place Network Conference, we wanted to give you a preview of one of the core experiences you’ll be part of throughout the week:

Place-Based Challenge–Solution Experience

This is a hands-on learning arc woven throughout the entire conference. You’ll step into the role of a learner and work through a real challenge from your classroom or school, using a place-based, project-based approach. Each day, you’ll build on your thinking by:

  • Clarifying and refining your challenge

  • Asking deeper, more meaningful questions

  • Considering your local context and community

  • Collaborating with other educators to explore ideas and solutions

By the end of the week, you’ll walk away with a thoughtfully developed solution proposal, grounded in your context and ready to share, refine, or implement.

What to think about before you arrive

You don’t need to come with a fully formed idea, but it will help to start reflecting on:

  • What’s a challenge or opportunity you’re currently facing?

  • Where are students disengaged, or where could learning feel more meaningful?

  • What’s something in your school or community you’ve been wanting to explore or improve?

We’ll guide you through narrowing and refining your focus once you’re here.

A few quick FAQs

Do I need to bring a specific challenge?
No, you’ll have time and support to identify and refine your focus.

What if my challenge feels too big (or too small)?
That’s completely okay. The goal is not to solve everything, but to develop a clear, grounded, and actionable proposal.

Will I work alone or with others?
Either! You can work independently or with your team, and you’ll also engage in structured peer collaboration throughout the week.

What will I leave with?
A practical, context-specific solution you can take back and implement or build on right away.

If you have any questions as you prepare, feel free to reach out. Otherwise, we’ll see you in four weeks!

Warmly,

Sharon Laidlaw
