Irene Clelland Hello everyone, At the Ipswich Gala, there was a couple who hadn’t There was a table at the Cairns Gala, of people who had come alone and were a bit reserved. But by the end of the night, they were all chatting and getting up and dancing together, and were having ball. A couple who live near Cairns had called our 24 Support Line for advice, just a week before our first regional Carers Forum was to be held in Cairns. It was great timing, because they came along and got to hear all about the services available in the region. On the Mental Health Walk for Awareness, I was walking with our team of carers and heard one carer advising another who was new to caring, ‘do whatever you can’ with Arafmi, because ‘it’s completely life-changing. It’s stories like these that really galvanise our work to reach as many mental health carers as possible, with our support services, retreats, workshops and events. Many thanks to carer Helen Foley, who shared some of her story with Queensland MPs at the launch of our new Parliamentary Friends of Mental Health Carers at Parliament House. The launch, during Carers' Week, was a mighty success in raising awareness among decision makers of the needs of mental health carers. Stories from carers also influence our work pushing for better processes to support carers in all the systems they use, particularly in the health system. That’s why I’ve been very busy promoting Working with Carers, Family and Kin – a Guide for Healthcare Professionals, a new resource developed by Arafmi.

October highlightsDuring Queensland Mental Health Week (4–12 October), National Carers Week (12–18 October) and Mental Health Month, our Arafmi team travelled across Queensland, connecting with carers, families, communities and partners. It was a month of celebration and recognition, reminding us that connecting for mental health builds awareness, supports wellbeing and strengthens the caring community.
Brisbane highlights Brisbane highlights included the official launch of the Parliamentary Friends of Mental Health Carers Group, co-chaired by Kerri-Anne Dooley MP (Redcliffe) and Jonty Bush MP (Cooper), along with attending the Queensland Mental Health Awards and the Walk for Awareness, where we walked side-by-side with carers for mental health and suicide prevention.
Regional highlights October was a busy month for our team, with events in Toowoomba, Gympie, Sunshine Coast, Cairns, Charleville, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Ipswich and Kilcoy. We met many mental health carers who hadn’t come across Arafmi before, sharing information and building new connections. These events also strengthened our partnerships with local services, creating more opportunities to support carers in regional and remote areas. Carers came together at a relaxed Noosaville lunch and the first Ipswich Gala Dinner, celebrating connection, care and community. Our team also hosted stalls at wellbeing expos and family fun days, and joined the National Carers Week Breakfast on the Sunshine Coast with more than 90 carers and partner organisations. In Bundaberg, Arafmi's Community Support Facilitator, Tracey Osborne spoke at the Strengthening Families Mental Health Forum, co-facilitated a mindfulness activity, ran an information session for carers and met with local leaders to raise awareness of issues for carers and available services.
Cairns highlights Arafmi hosted and joined several events in Cairns, bringing carers, community organisations and sector leaders together for connection, learning and support. Carers took part in a Self-Compassion Workshop to explore simple ways to manage stress and care for their wellbeing, delivered with Torres Cape HHS and Cairns and Hinterland HHS. Arafmi co-hosted the Cairns Carer Gala Dinner with Wellways Carer Gateway and Carers Queensland (click here for reflections and photos) and held a Mental Health Carers Forum (click here for an overview and photos), bringing carers together to connect and share experiences. Sector leaders including our own Arafmi CEO, Irene Clelland spoke at the Mental Health Professional Networking Event about supporting carers and working together across the sector. Arafmi also hosted a stall at the Cairns Mental Health Week celebrations and visited the Wellways Carer Gateway carer hub. CEO Irene Clelland and a local carer spoke with ABC Radio North Queensland, sharing insights about Arafmi’s work and the Lived Experience of mental health carers (listen here). Carer Support Update

Young Carers UpdateYoung Carers Mini RetreatYoung carers aged 18–25 joined Arafmi at the Visible Ink Youth Hub in Fortitude Valley for a two-day retreat, a safe space to share experiences, build confidence and highlight the vital role young carers play in our communities. Through sessions in Mindful Watercolour (run by Leticia Collins), Quiet the Critic (Little Dreamers) and a live performance from Mind Blank, participants explored mindfulness, creativity and self-belief while reflecting on mental health and caring. Feedback from participants was very positive: This was very enjoyable and helpful, thanks for giving us insights on such an important topic. A big thank you to everyone who helped make this retreat such an inspiring and supportive space for young carers.
Policy and Advocacy Team UpdateFar North Queensland Carers drive the conversation on local needsAt the recent Mental Health Carer Forum in Cairns, Arafmi’s Policy and Advocacy team shared information about our current work to address the needs and challenges of families and carers across Queensland. Carers then shared local challenges and ideas to better support families and carers in the Cairns, Cape and Torres
regions.
These insights will guide Arafmi’s future advocacy and ensure carers’ voices from these regions continue to be heard at the policy level.
Spotlight on Self-Care
Building healthy boundaries(Adapted from Helping Minds’ Sunday Self-Care Reflections: “Building Healthy Boundaries and Why Boundaries Matter”) For many carers, it can feel uncomfortable to say no or take a step back, but taking on too much can leave us feeling overwhelmed and drained. When we say yes out of guilt or habit, we can lose sight of our own needs. Boundaries remind us to pause and ask, “Do I have the energy for this right now?” If not, creating space for your own needs can make a big difference. It might mean letting a call go to voicemail, keeping a visit short, or taking ten quiet minutes with a cup of tea before moving on to the next thing. Boundaries take practice, and we won’t get it right every day. But each small choice to rest, pause or say 'no' helps us show up with more calm, energy and authenticity for ourselves and the people we care for. Carer Opportunities and Resources

Have your say: help shape the future of carer supportUnpaid carers across Australia are invited to take part in a survey to help shape the National Carer Strategy Action Plan 2024–2027. Have your Human Rights been upheld in 2025?The National Mental Health Consumer Alliance has launched Australia’s only national Human Rights Survey designed by and for people with lived experience of mental health challenges. They want to hear how your human rights were upheld—or breached—in 2025. Whether in mental health, justice, health, or other systems, your story helps track where Australia is meeting its international obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). Your responses are completely anonymous and will be analysed by the lived-experience research group ACACIA. The results will shape national advocacy to make sure human rights are real for all mental health consumers. Take the survey now — closes 31 December 2025. What's in the News
