PLASMA ENERGY - CATCHING A STAR IN A JAR!

Bringing science fiction down to Earth this month, Tim Benson, Chair of Powerful Thinking, updates us on developments in fusion energy science and how it could play a part in meeting our world’s ever-increasing energy requirements, using materials that are carbon-free and that produce highly concentrated energy.

Currently, this process is both costly and problematic but, in first Japan and now France, headway is being made. Experts believe that, with another 10 years of so R&D, plasma fusion could become a viable source of clean energy, unaffected by location or weather conditions. Read the blog on the Powerful Thinking website.

Waste Baling Machines: Reduce and Recycle

Designed by waste experts and event industry professionals, Waste Baling Machines has launched the Recycling Processing Unit (RPU), which enables festivals and events of all sizes to reduce waste transport carbon emissions by up to 80% and increase recycling rates.

By starting the recycling process onsite – crushing recyclable waste into neat, stackable bales 10-20% the size of the original, and glass into recyclable cullet that takes just 20% of the storage space, so events need just 20% of the transportation for their recyclable waste and substantially reduce carbon footprint as well as increasing the recycling rate. Read the full Waste Baling Machine case study

Resource Spotlight: Glossary of Sustainability Terms

A new open-source glossary of sustainability terms has been launched on the Vision:2025 website, to help event organisers understand the language of sustainability.

Written by consultancy Hope Solutions, it was identified as a need during the work to write the new Purple Guide Chapter on Environmental Sustainability, which has now been launched on the Purple Guide website. Fusion Festivals Case Study: Rocken am Brocken

Each month we feature a case study from the FUSION – Festivals as Social Innovation Incubators project. This month we look at Rocken am Brocken, an annual three-day open-air festival that takes place in a meadow bordering the Harz National Park, Germany.  The festival runs under the motto “Nature, Music, Friendship” and the programme focuses on creating experiences that connect people to nature with a percentage of profits going to support the National Park. Read the Rocken am Brocken case study on the Fusion Festivals website.

Future Festival Tools Case Study: Body and Soul Festival, Ireland

Body & Soul Festival, Ireland raised their recycling rate to 60% by improving their waste collection systems and working closely with waste contractors and crews. They also implemented a three-bin system front of house and hired volunteers (called Earth Guardians) to monitor these bin stations and engage with the attendees so that the material flows would be kept separated.
