Volunteer Opportunity Spotlight: Pitt United Way at the University Store

Donate your time by volunteering at the University Store on Fifth, where the University Store will donate $35 per 2-hour volunteer shift to the University’s United Way Fund. Shifts run from Sunday, August 27 through Saturday, September 2. Shifts run in 2-hour increments starting at 7 a.m. and ending at 7 p.m.

Get a free volunteer t-shirt, and you will be entered to win a $50 gift certificate.

Hill District Community Engagement Center Back-to-School Social

The University of Pittsburgh's Community Engagement Center in the Hill District is seeking volunteers to support their Back-to-School Social on Saturday, August 26.

This event aims to provide out-of-school time resources to residents of the Hill District, as well as school supplies and activities for youth. Volunteers will be tasked with helping staff set up and break down the event, assist with a registration desk for residents, and assist with ensuring vendors and residents alike have what they need for the duration of the event. Volunteers will be needed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

MakerDate 2023

MakerDate takes a traditional date auction and gives it a twist — guests can bid on dates with makers, artists, and innovators from the Pittsburgh area and spend time with them to learn about their process. The event will be held on Saturday, September 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Union Project.

Volunteer tasks include:

  • Welcome guests to the event
  • Check IDs and give out wristbands
  • Assist with the Live Auction (paddle registration, backstage hand)
  • Assist with Silent Auction
  • Assist with Raffle (selling raffle tickets, promoting the local businesses)
  • Clean up Crew
  • Host a craft station (supplies and instructions provided by Assemble)
  • Set up and/or break down of event
  • Direct parking and attendees

Volunteer shifts run in 2-hour increments starting at 9 a.m. and ending at 11 p.m.

2023 Greater Pittsburgh Nonprofit Partnership (GPNP) Summit

The GPNP Summit offers an opportunity to connect 1,000+ attendees with pertinent resources; identify and develop cross-sectoral strategies for nonprofit organizations, local businesses, and the public sector; and empower individuals as well as organizations to collaborate, advocate, and act.

This year’s Summit will be in-person at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center on November 9-10. The focus will be on celebrating and elevating the region’s existing transformative leaders and collaborative partnerships, while sparking innovative solutions for co-creating an equitable future.

Volunteers are asked to serve a 2-4 hour volunteer shift in return for free registration to the full Summit. Volunteers will be needed Thursday, November 9 and Friday, November 10. Volunteer shifts begin at 7:30 a.m. and end at 7 p.m.

Volunteer opportunities at Pitt are open to all members of the University community and provide a chance to make meaningful connections with your colleagues and classmates.

  • Students may volunteer for any opportunity that interests them (plus, some are eligible for OCC credit!).
  • Faculty may volunteer as many hours as their time and inclination allows.
  • Staff are eligible to receive paid time off each month to participate in community service or volunteer activities. Full-time regular staff members may use up to 7.5 hours during regular working hours per month; part-time regular staff members are eligible for pro-rated volunteer time.
