BROADCAST SPOTLIGHT: IMSA

SMT wraps IMSA season finale with new graphics enhancements

Thanks to Michael Guariglia, Coordinating Producer, for contributing to this report and to Video Editor Shaun Bales for the highlight reel.

SMT wrapped another season with NASCAR Media’s production of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, culminating in a sold-out finale at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. The crowd was so large that the track had to turn fans away—a nod to IMSA’s growing popularity and the excitement surrounding the season’s final race.

For the 2025 season, SMT continued to expand its role, building on several new enhancements introduced over the past two years. Following the addition of telemetry and qualifying sector graphics in 2024, this year saw the integration of insert graphics, a new feature evolved from another NASCAR Media product that became a sales opportunity for IMSA.

“Throughout the year, we had a total of 15 different remote ops contribute to the show,” said Coordinating Producer Michael Guariglia. “To perform at a high level across so many hands shows the incredible strength of our remote team.”

All operations for IMSA were supported remotely from NASCAR Productions in Concord, with on-site SMT coverage for key endurance events in Long Beach and Detroit. Remote SMT products included:

  • GEMLive: Powering the international and NBC scoring pylons

  • GEMStat: Providing scoring prompters, telemetry ingest and the graphics interface

The new insert graphics brought a fresh creative look to IMSA’s international broadcasts, incorporating lower thirds, slab fonts and full-screen elements inspired by NASCAR Screens’ GEMLive package.

“We took elements from the NASCAR side and gave them an IMSA twist,” Michael said. “This evolved into a data-driven, manufacturer-forward design approach that creates more opportunities for sponsorship and fan engagement.”

These successful enhancements have already prompted IMSA to invest in more design updates for the 2026 season from SMT Creative Studio. Plans are underway for additional data-integrated graphics, increased manufacturer visibility, and even a potential third full-time SMT operator to support future shows. A complete Pylon redesign is also being considered for 2027.

“This is a testament to the level of execution from the SMT Remote Team,” Michael added. “Our engineering, creative services, and operators continue to push the envelope, enhancing both production value and the viewer experience.”

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: NHL ON-ICE POWER PLAY CLOCK

SMT debuts on-ice Power Play Clock on TSN

SMT introduced its new on-ice Power Play Clock to Canadian audiences this month during the Oct. 14 NHL broadcast of Nashville vs. Toronto on TSN. The virtual graphic, displayed directly on the ice near the top of the offensive zone, is designed to make the power play situation more prominent and intuitive for viewers, eliminating the need to look away from the action to find the timer in the broadcast’s heads-up display. The innovative enhancement received positive feedback from the production team, who opted for a slightly lower opacity for optimal on-ice visibility. Following additional adjustments by SMT’s VFX team, the refined Power Play Clock aired again during the New Jersey vs. Toronto game on Oct. 21 at Scotiabank Arena, where it continued to deliver an engaging and seamless viewing experience for fans.
