Emory Decatur Hospital opens advanced
gastrointestinal procedure suite

Emory Decatur Hospital has unveiled four million dollars in improvements to its endoscopy center, converting 1,200 square feet of existing space into an advanced gastrointestinal (GI) procedure suite.

With the renovation, Emory Decatur Hospital's GI physicians will be able to serve more patients with interventional and minimally invasive GI procedures using cutting-edge technology in a specialized and comfortable environment. Following two years of planning, design, and construction, the expanded space involved the renovation of three multipurpose rooms into one dedicated GI procedure suite with advanced medical imaging technology to support many different procedures and treatments.

Shanthi Srinivasan, MD, Director for the Division of Digestive Diseases, shares the impact of this advancement as it relates to education in the DOM, “We are very excited about the opening of the new advanced endoscopy suite at EDH! This suite will help support specialized endoscopic procedures at EDH. I would like to thank Dr. Sonali Sakaria, Clinical Chief of GI at EDH and Dr. Field Willingham for leading this expansion. We also thank the support of EDH CEO Jen Schuck, Andy Hogan, Rebecca Swann, Andy Wurtzel and Marc Mathai who were all very instrumental in the success of this project.”

Two DOM faculty members involved in study to help diagnose and treat patients with hepatitis C more quickly

Emory University and Grady Health System clinicians, researchers, and staff have played a pivotal role in testing and conducting clinical studies related to the first FDA-authorized point-of-care hepatitis C (HCV) test. The novel test will enable a person to be tested, and if positive for HCV, quickly connect to care and potentially begin life-saving treatment, all in a singular visit. The HCV test, known as Xpert HCV and created by Cepheid, is the first HCV test that can be used in settings where patient care is administered, providing a test result in about an hour using a blood sample from the fingertip.

General Internal Medicine faculty members Shelly-Ann Fluker, MD, FACP, (pictured left) and Lesley Miller, MD, (pictured right), with the School of Medicine, Grady Liver Clinic, and Grady Memorial Hospital, were a part of the teams involved in this study.

Dr. Fluker shares the following about this study.

“Having this device removes so many barriers that prevent people from being diagnosed with hepatitis C. Increasing how quickly someone receives a diagnosis will enable us to cure and prevent more people from dying. It’s definitely a game changer. The faculty, residents, and staff really embraced the project — everyone was so enthusiastic about their ability to contribute to such important work that we knew would directly impact our own patients, as well as patients nationwide.”
