The  ProteinMB E-News is your go-to source for Industry Updates and Trends, ProteinMB Engagement Opportunities, Event Listings, Funding Opportunities, Resources and updates on the implementation of the Manitoba Protein Advantage (MPA) Action Framework. Here’s a look at what the ProteinMB team has  been up to this past month: 

May 27: Participated in the May Canadian National Index of Agri-Food Performance Table, learning about GHGs data.

May 28: Partnered with CME Manitoba to design a Value Chain Mapping Tool to identify opportunities and mitigate risks within Manitoba's sustainable protein supply chain. 

June 4: Attended the Manitoba Digital Agriculture Table at Innovation Farms, focusing on industry and academic alignment, skills development, and education. 

June 11: Celebrated resilience at the Food and Beverage Manitoba AGM, highlighting the sector’s efforts in sustainability. 

June 17: Hosted the inaugural Protein Executive Forum, facilitating networking and discussions on growth and innovation in the protein sector. 

June 18: Kicked off the Manitoba Sustainable Protein Research Symposium with the Industry Innovation Workshop, fostering collaboration between researchers, government, organizations, and industry representatives. 

June 18 (Evening): Attended Manitoba Sustainable Protein Research Symposium networking event at Journey to Churchill, featuring presentations on wildlife nutrition and opportunities for student and researcher engagement. 

June 19: Participated in the Manitoba Sustainable Protein Research Symposium  "Embracing Technology for Sustainable Protein" The theme showcased  talks on green technologies, genetic advancements, and cellular agriculture, plus student presentations and a ProteinMB facilitated panel discussion on  Advanced Perspective on Workforce needs for Manitoba. 

June 21: Observed National Indigenous Day at The Forks put on by Wa-Say Healing Centre, celebrating Indigenous culture and contributions. 

June 25: Represented the protein industry at Manitoba Agriculture Minister Kostyshyn’s Pre-Federal/Provincial/Territorial (FPT) Engagement Session with stakeholders  

June 26: Attended the Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba Brown Bag Lunch Series learning from Dr. Kevin Lamoureux discussion on “The Importance of Treaties and the Treaty Relationship”. 

June 27: Facilitated the quarterly Sustainable Protein  Board Meeting  

June 27: Facilitated a Water and Wastewater Forum, engaging senior leaders of protein manufacturers dealing with water or wastewater issues to network, share difficulties, discuss opportunities and develop advocacy, events or services based on industry needs.

First Scalable Green Ammonia Production System Successfully Installed on Manitoba Farm 

FuelPositive installed the first containerized green ammonia production system on a farm in Sperling, Manitoba. This system produces ammonia for on-farm use, eliminating carbon emissions during production and following a circular, environmentally friendly approach.  

Food and Beverage Manitoba is Hiring 

Food & Beverage Manitoba is seeking a Director of Operations & Finance to manage day-to-day operations, financial, and administrative aspects. The organization supports the food and beverage processing industry by developing markets, training workforce, and sharing critical trade information. 

Sustainable Agriculture Partnerships (SCAP) Funding Opportunities are open for intake

Livestock Predation Prevention Program: Producers with a paid livestock predation claim under the Manitoba Wildlife Damage Compensation Program in 2021 or later are eligible to apply. 

Predator Resistant Fence Construction – Accepting applications until June 14, 2024.  

Pre-Approved Livestock Predation Prevention Equipment and Guardian Dogs – Accepting rebate claims until Dec. 20, 2024.  

Indigenous Agriculture and Relationship Development 

Relationship Development and Engagement – Accepting applications until to July 4, 2024  

Funding to assist the development and delivery of engagement activities between industry, academia and Indigenous Peoples.  

Indigenous Agriculture and Food Systems – Accepting applications until July 18, 2024.  

Funding to assist the development and delivery of activities that will increase food security and sovereignty in Indigenous communities, across three funding areas:  

  • Planning and Consulting  
  • Training and Resource Development  
  • Capital Equipment and Software  

Research Connections Grant Program Launched by Research Manitoba  

Research Manitoba is offering funding opportunities for Manitoba-based research events. This grant reflects Research Manitoba’s commitment to fostering innovation, collaboration, and knowledge exchange within Manitoba’s research community. 

The Research Connections grant is designed to support events that create skill development opportunities, facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration, promote research findings to the public, and connect researchers with potential industry partners. Check out the Research Connections Grant for more information! 

Manitoba Sustainable Protein Research Chair hosted the 4th Annual Manitoba Sustainable Protein Research Symposium

 

Nearly 200 people gathered to discuss sustainable protein at the Embracing Technology for Sustainable Protein, Manitoba Sustainable Protein Research Symposium. The event included a ProteinMB facilitated panel discussion on Advanced Perspective on Workforce needs for Manitoba, presentations on novel green technologies to sustainably produce nitrogen fertilizer, advancements in genetic techniques to create sustainable plant protein advancements in genetic techniques to modify rumen GHG emissions, the extraction and processing techniques for novel plant-based proteins and the innovations in cellular agriculture. The day also comprised of student poster and oral presentations which will be posted to the Manitoba Sustainable Protein Research Symposium website in the upcoming weeks. A big ProteinMB congratulations to the following award winners:

  • • Outstanding Oral Presentation (MSc): Amanjeet Singh (University of Manitoba, Food and Human Nutritional Sciences)
  • • Outstanding Oral Presentation (PhD/PDF): Harshani Nadeeshani Vidana Hewage (University of Manitoba, Food and Human Nutritional Sciences)
  • • Outstanding Poster Presentation (MSc): Vishvendra Kumar (University of Saskatchewan)
