See below for details! A special welcome to new HDR candidates commencing their PhD and MPhil programs. Leadership and the Art of Influence When: 23 February 2023, 10:00am - 12:00pm It’s often said that influence is essential to leadership – but what is influence? In this session Gary Edwards will demonstrate what influence is, how it works, why we are influenced, and how we can use that for our own benefit – whether we are in a formal leadership role or just trying to “lead” someone to where we’d like them to go. Project Management When: 28 February 2023, 9:30am - 12:30pm Recommended for mid to late candidature HDR students, this workshop will provide an introduction into the context, rationale, strategy and tactics of project management. Presented by the Entrepreneurship, Commercialisation & Innovation Centre (ECIC), this workshop will provide you with basic knowledge in core areas of scope, time and cost, allowing you to confidently deal with the ever growing complexities and challenges of project management. Register here. Handling Difficult Conversations Well When: 2 March 2023, 10:00am - 12:00pm It sometimes seems that life is full of difficult conversations! They’re the ones that we put off, avoid or stumble our way through. But it is possible to handle them with greater certainty and confidence – and still get a good result with less emotional turmoil. In this session we will look at how these conversations arise, how they differ from “normal” conversations and how you can use collaborative communication skills to build relationships, reduce conflict, increase learning and improve outcomes. Researcher Profiles and Personal Branding When: 7 March 2022, 2:00pm - 3:00pm This session will provide an overview of why having a researcher profile is important, and how this contributes to developing your personal brand. It will cover where to find the relevant systems, how they link together, managing a personal brand and profile, and where to find more help and training when it is needed. Register here.

This Information Session provides an opportunity to learn about the program requirements, procedures and how to ensure you make the most of the program. Register now. Other Training & EventsPACE Mentoring Program PACE Mentoring is a free industry mentoring program that matches jobseekers and students with disability with experienced professionals from leading Australian businesses. In this 4-month mentoring program you will develop your interview skills, professional networks and career confidence. New HDR copyright course The University Library has developed a new CaRST-accredited course covering all things copyright for higher-degree-by-research students. Considering copyright in the planning stage of a research project avoids having to address later hurdles when submitting a thesis or when looking into publishing options. The course covers copyright principles, using materials for research and study, processing copyright clearances and assessing publishing agreements, among other aspects. Completion accrues two CaRST points. HDR students can enrol here. Learn to Program: R Getting started with R and RStudio can be challenging, particularly if you've never programmed before. At this introductory workshop, we teach fundamental programming concepts and apply them to a data analysis workflow. Join us for a live-coding course where we write programs that produce results, using the researcher-focused training modules from the highly regarded Software Carpentry Foundation. This beginner live-coding workshop assumes no previous experience with any programming language. We will write programs that analyse data and produce results, using the researcher-focused training modules from the highly regarded Software Carpentry Foundation. Zoom Meeting, limited places 22 & 23 of March, 9:30am-12:30 pm ACDT. Register here. Excel for Researchers Data rarely comes in the form you require. Often it is messy. Sometimes it is incomplete. And sometimes there's too much of it. Frequently, it has errors. We will use one of the most widespread data wrangling tools, Microsoft Excel, to import, sort, filter, copy, protect, transform, summarise, merge, and visualise research data. While aimed at novice Excel users, most attendees will walk away with new tricks to work more efficiently with their research data. Zoom Meeting, limited places 4 -5 of April, 9:30-12:30 pm ACDT. Register here. NEWS Counselling Support Counselling support is available, free for all enrolled students. The service provide 50 minute confidential consultations, weekdays 9-5, and will work with students to address anything getting in the way of study. MATE Bystander Training Join Joanne McNamara, a specialist in sexual violence (response and training) at the University of Adelaide for a three-hour workshop championing positive action towards the prevention of harmful and problematic behaviour. MATE stands for Motivating Action Towards Empowerment, a free education and intervention program aimed to inspire and empower participants with the tools to recognise sexual violence and harassment in its various forms, and to feel confident to speak out and help others. CaRST Tips Did you know that a requirement of your CCSP is to do a Skills Assessment/Development Plan? This will help you to define your current skills and the skills you would like to work on in order to achieve your immediate and future goals, such as career path. This is not set in stones, this tools is here to help you work better toward you goals and can be edited during your Phd/Master journey. For more information, please refer to the How to complete your Skills Assessment and How to complete your Development Plan quick reference guides. An example of a CaRST Progress Summary is also attached.
