Karinya News - January 2023

Dear Friends of Karinya

Is it too late to say, "Happy New Year"?

Welcome to 2023. We do hope the sounds of summer have brought some rest and relaxation to you all amidst the stuff of life. Many of you will no doubt be back into the swing of all the usual matters of the day, but hopefully for the majority there has been a bit of time to take a breath or two.

Something to engage you and also provide a little mid-week breather, is an invitation to enjoy the beautiful courtyard at the Hotel Kurrajong Canberra on 1 March 2023.

Platters, live food stations and some beverages will be provided.  We have seen the proposed menu and the food looks scrumptious! Background vibes will be provided by the wonderful Ally, who is "Rhythm & Girl". Book a ticket today and come and spend a couple of hours relaxing with friends.

Whilst you gather and enjoy the Autumn evening together with friends, your ticket price and the contribution of the Hotel Kurrajong Canberra, will support Karinya House.

If you are unable to attend the event - please share this invitation with family, friends and colleagues who are in Civic or parliamentary triangle area.

We thank the Hotel Kurrajong Canberra for their support throughout 2022/23.

Book your tickets here.

Thank you for being part of Christmas at Karinya!

As is the way at Karinya, we were embraced with great warmth, joy and generosity across December.

Every woman and her family celebrated the season with gifts and a hamper especially put together for them by the care team, all sponsored by members of the Karinya Village. We thank every individual and family donor who supported women and families in this way.

We also acknowledge the many businesses and community groups including Harry's Autocare, The Office for Women, The Independent Parliamentary Expenses Authority, Datacom, Sri Sathya Sai Organisation, theCBRwoman, Rotary Belconnen, Dickston Baptist Church, Rize Up, St Gregory's Queanbeyan, ADF Australian Guard, McDonalds Canberra, ACT Embroiders Guild who provided gifts and hamper items.

Gifts and Hampers provided to Karinya were valued at around $20,000. Wow!

We received generous support for the Christmas Appeal also, providing financial support to directly fund services for women, including safety, shelter, a listening ear, advocacy, support for health and wellbeing, time and space in their journeys. The appeal was boosted with a very unexpected and generous gift from Synergy Group, with Karinya House being chosen to benefit from the staff Christmas Giving Fund.  The gift of $19,400 is still rather overwhelming! Another very generous donation came from The Mercy Association, and this also contributed significantly to the appeal. The Christmas Appeal raised $53,845 and represents 7.6% of the 2022/2023 budget for donor funding revenue.

There was a one-of-a-kind gift that came in the form of the magnificent cubby pictured.  This piece of joy, and fun for resident children, came from our wonderful partner, Monarch Building Solutions, who bid for the ex-Floriade cubby at a fundraising auction. Monarch gifted the cubby to us, as well as the necessary landscaping and the delivery, including crane, to get the cubby over the main building and into the play area!

A shout out to thank The Chat!

The live Canberra show for Chat 10 Looks 3, the dynamic (and fun!) duo of Leigh Sales and Annabel Crabb, is always held in December at the ANU. This year's show was even live streamed for "Chatters" far and wide.

For the fourth year, Karinya House was the charity chosen to be supported through ticket sales. Over the course of these four years, we have received close to $10,000.

Annabel was a guest speaker at a Karinya House fundraising event, back in 2015 when we launched our appeal to raise funds for the move to the New Karinya, including fit-out. We greatly value the connection, and with a number of keen "Chatters" across the team, we extend our gratitude to Leigh and Annabel for their wonderful support of Karinya House, and other charities across Australia, through their live shows.

Canberra Day Local Heroes

We are looking for a corporate partner to be a Canberra Day Local Hero for Karinya House, for this Canberra Day 8 March 2023 and each year forward as desired.

By joining Canberra's Community Foundation, Hands Across Canberra, and registering your business as a matching partner for the appeal, supporting Karinya House, you will create an annual tradition for your organisation and Karinya House. Corporate Matching Partners provide their partner charity with a $5,000 (minumum) donation in matched funds, allowing Karinya to leverage the partner support. Throughout the campaign your support and involvement will be highlighted in a number of ways. More information can be provided upon request.

If you are currently not a corporate partner with Karinya House, and/or this broader opportunity appeals to you, please contact Jo for more information.
