August 29, 2022 Newsletter No images? Click here Hello from the Office of Science Outreach! We hope everyone had a good summer! Our Office of Science Outreach at Penn State was thrilled to have Science-U camps back in person! Read more about them below and see what other STEM-related activities are happening soon. We wish all students and teachers a wonderful start to the 2022-2023 school year! After a two-year break, Science-U was back at University Park this summer! It was a busy and exciting seven weeks with eleven science camps for over 300 campers. Campers entering grades 2-12 enjoyed weekly science topics about nature, robotics, medicine, engineering, astrobiology, and much more! While most campers were from Central Pennsylvania, some came from Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Texas, and even Alaska! We are grateful for the help of our amazing summer staff who served as curriculum mentors, evening mentors, extended care mentors, lab coordinators, and program assistants! They did an awesome job explaining scientific content to the campers and keeping them safe and happy. Lastly, we could not have conducted Science-U without the dedication of our camp directors and instructors! They spent a lot of time designing the curriculum and making sure the Science-U experience was engaging and fun for all! Below are a few photos from the summer, but please visit our Facebook photo albums to see more. Save the Dates!Although we have already started planning for Science-U 2023, our Office of Science Outreach is also organizing several events for the upcoming school year. Read about two of them, mark your calendars, and click on the logos for more information. Haunted-U is scheduled for Saturday, October 8, 2022 from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. This FREE family event at the University Park campus will offer fun science demonstrations, Halloween activities and "haunting" lab tours presented by Penn State faculty and students. ENVISION is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, February 25, 2023. This full day of science enrichment will invite middle and high school students to attend STEM workshops on campus and to network with college students and professionals working in STEM. We also hope to be holding other events in the community - so stay tuned for more information! Science at the GrangeThanks to all the Penn State researchers who joined us at the annual Ask a Scientist event at the 2022 Center County Grange Fair - and to all the visitors who came to see the exciting research being done at Penn State University! Last Friday, teams of researchers spoke with community members and shared demonstrations that included a solar telescope and a canine cognition study. A great time was had by all! Congratulations to Science-U @Home!WPSU's production of a Science-U @Home Special has been nominated for a 2022 Mid Atlantic Emmy! This 30-minute video encourages parents to teach science to their children and is available for viewing by clicking on the photo or by visiting the Science-U @Home website below. The website shows various activities and experiments, from simple to advanced, that families can do together with supplies they may already have on hand. Take a look! Stories Under the SkyOn the first Friday of each month researchers from Penn State’s Department of Anthropology, and storytellers from the State College community, will share myths and legends from diverse cultures about the stars in the sky! After each night’s story is told, Penn State Department of Astronomy students and researchers will guide guests in stargazing, if skies are clear. This program will be held in the Childhood's Gate Children's Garden at the Arboretum and will be cancelled with steady rain or inclement weather. All ages are welcome! Participation is free and no registration is required. Dates and times:
