Bishop's Homily for the Solemnity of Christ the King

[Christ the King Church, Kahului (Closing of the Annual Diocesan Conference of Filipino Catholic Clubs)]

Some time ago I made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Our bus driver was a young Muslim Palestinian. One day I made it a point to go back to the bus early, before the rest of the group arrived, so that I could speak with him. I asked him how it was to live in the Holy Land, knowing that there are tensions between Palestinians and Israelis and between Muslims, Christians, and Jews. He told me of some of the great challenges that had to be faced and of some of the injustices that almost all groups perpetrated against other groups. What he said in the end, however, really took me aback. After describing the many tensions and complexities that were a part of life there, he said, “Maybe it is Jesus who will save us from all of this.” It was an expression of hope in the midst of so much suffering, and, in a very small way, a profession of faith in Jesus from one of the most unlikely sources. I am hoping that his response was based on the many interactions he had had with disciples of Jesus as he drove them around the Holy Land, giving him hope in someone we know is always ready to save us. When Father Ese’ese “Ace” Tui heard from a few families in his parish concerned about losing their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits from the government shutdown that began Oct. 1, he knew he had to act.

The pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Honolulu immediately engaged his parishioners and staff to help, and they quickly responded.

“It was like the Holy Spirit was prompting me,” Father Tui said.

He also connected with Shana Tong, the president and head of Maryknoll School, and Maryknoll’s faculty and staff. Together, they worked with students and families to collect stacks of nonperishable food donations and gift cards. Read more...

Walk with Migrants, Workers, and the Excluded

“The Church supports your just struggles for land, housing and work. Like my predecessor Francis, I believe that just ways begin from the ground up, from the periphery toward the center.” - Pope Leo XIV, Address to the World Meeting of Popular Movements, 10/23/2025

As this Jubilee Year nears its close, Pope Leo XIV has offered a powerful reminder of where the Gospel calls us to stand, on the periphery with the marginalized. Speaking to grassroots leaders from around the world, the Holy Father emphasized that the world’s “new things” must never be defined merely by technology, profit, or the priorities of the powerful, but instead by the lived reality of the excluded. “The truly new is seen from the margins, from the faces of those who suffer exclusion.” These are the workers, migrants, mothers, farm laborers, young people, and kupuna whose daily lives reveal both the wounds and the beauty of our shared humanity.

Pope Leo believes the most meaningful “new things” today are the persistent cries for “land, housing, and work”—which he boldly identifies as “sacred”human rights. He emphasized that those on the peripheries “cry out, not out of desperation but out of desire.” Their resilience makes them “social poets,” imagining new forms of solidarity in a world that often overlooks them. Their voices and creativity show the Church where the Holy Spirit is alive and moving. Read more...

ʻOhana Mass, Nov 29

Saturday, November 29, 2025 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu

At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “ʻOhana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “ʻOhana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 p.m. at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.

Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

Saint of the Week

Saint Andrew Dung-Lac and his Companions, Martyrs
17th–19th Centuries
Memorial - November 24

From the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, an estimated 130,000 to 300,000 men, women, and children; bishops, priests, and religious suffered martyrdom in Vietnam because they refused to renounce their Catholic faith. They were arrested, brutally tortured, and killed. Their torture was methodical, diabolical, and orchestrated to impose the maximum pain over the longest period of time possible. To escape that fate, all those arrested had to do was renounce their faith, step on a crucifix, or blaspheme Christ. If they did, they were granted kindnesses by the imperial courts. If they didn’t, their suffering grew more intense until they died. Read more...
