What can we do to better respond to the needs and challenges faced by women who work or socialize at night?

Women and the Nighttime Economy

At work or play, women experience a different world at night.

Whether enjoying Dallas' sociable districts, managing a life around her night shift job, or even at her nighttime workplace, a woman juggles disadvantages not experienced by a man.

Women who work at night do not have the same access to support services, family services, or personal services as women who work by day.

During the coronavirus pandemic, childcare, housework, and stay-at-home schooling have mostly fallen to mothers. These responsibilities are compounded for women who work at night.

Nightshift work has a negative effect on health, relationships, marriages and children, and increases rates of separation and divorce.

One in three women going out at night report unwanted sexual attention – including harassment, unwanted touching, or sexual gestures. 68% of those women report physical and/or verbal aggression.

More sexual harassment claims in the U.S. are filed in the restaurant industry than in any other, where as many as 90% of women experience some form of sexual harassment.

What can businesses and business districts do to reassure female customers at night? How can the City of Dallas help?

And what can we all do to better respond to the needs and challenges faced by women who work or socialize at night?
