Summer programs for young students help build pipeline to health professions |
Once again, UF Health and the College of Medicine will engage with high school and college students from around the state and across the country in a number of specially designed programs aimed at cultivating interest in the health professions.
“It is remarkable to see the shift in a young person’s thinking when they realize there are opportunities for them they hadn’t thought of,” said Donna Parker, M.D., associate dean for diversity and health equity.

Launching phase 2 of strategic planning |
Phase 1 of the strategic planning process wraps up next week as the surveys close and cohort retreats are complete. As promised, Dean Colleen G. Koch, M.D., M.S., M.B.A., hosted four students who attended the learners retreat in April to a lunch at Hotel Eleo last week. The students, whose names were chosen in a random drawing, took the opportunity to discuss with the dean topics they felt are important to the College of Medicine's future.

Dr. Mary Patterson named interim chair of emergency medicine
Mary D. Patterson, M.D., M.Ed., will apply her leadership qualities to a new role at the College of Medicine as interim chair of the department of emergency medicine, beginning June 11. An accomplished medical educator and pediatric emergency medicine physician, she joined the College of Medicine faculty in 2018 as associate dean of experiential learning and the Lou Oberndorf Professor of Healthcare Technology. She is also director of the UF Center for Experiential Learning and Simulation.
“I know Dr. Patterson will create a collaborative working environment that builds on the strengths of the department of emergency medicine during this transitional period,” said Dean Colleen G. Koch, M.D., M.S., M.B.A.

Former college leaders give back with generous $1M gift
Drs. Tim Flynn and Marian Limacher are familiar names among the College of Medicine and UF Health hallways, each having spent more than 30 years as faculty members. The emeriti professors are giving back to the college by helping the next generation of medical students get their own start at UF. Together, they have established the Timothy C. Flynn, M.D., and Marian C. Limacher, M.D., Medical Scholarship Endowment fund. The scholarship will support students who are the first in their family to attend medical school, as each of them were.
“It’s important for us to give back because it’s part of our ethos,” Limacher said. “We have been so privileged in our careers. It’s our way to say thank you.”
