Royal Society Te Apārangi 2025 Marsden Fund

 

About the Scheme

The Marsden Fund invests in excellent, investigator-led research aimed at generating new knowledge, with long-term benefit to New Zealand.

Three types of awards are offered:
• Fast-Start: for emerging researchers – to give an impetus to their careers by promoting them as sole Principal Investigators (PI) in their own research programme
• Standard: for established and emerging researchers
• Council Award: for projects that are interdisciplinary in nature, with larger teams

Key Things to Note

Internal Deadline: Due to Research Funding Team by noon, Monday 17 February 2025.
• Fast-Start and Standard Expressions of Interest (EOIs)
• Marsden Fund Council Award FULL proposals

Grant Value All grants are for a maximum of three years and are GST exclusive.
• Fast-Start: up to $120K p.a.
• Standard: up to $240-$320K p.a. (varies by panel)
• Council Award: up to $1M p.a.

Eligibility Open to New Zealand-based researchers.
Fast-Start:
• PI full time in New Zealand
• Have not previously been a PI on a Marsden Fund contract
• Have completed their PhD no more than 7 years ago OR (if research career began before PhD) have commenced their research career no more than 10 years ago (including the time taken to undertake their PhD studies)

Standard and Council Award:
• PI New Zealand-based (at least half their time in New Zealand)

Note:
Eligible applicants must:
• Be involved in no more than ONE proposal as a Principal Investigator per funding round
• Be involved in no more than TWO proposals in total per funding round; either as a Principal Investigator on one and an Associate Investigator on another or as an Associate Investigator on two proposals.

Submission Process

  1. To register to apply, please email the following information to the Research Funding Team via submissions@auckland.ac.nz: title, full name, email address, faculty and department or click the above button.
  2. Complete the application on the Marsden portal and submit it to the Research Funding Team by 12pm, Monday 17 February 2025.
  3. Create a record in the Research Funding Module (RFM) uploading all application documents and submit for faculty sign off by 12pm, Monday 17 February 2025.
  4. Following on from the QA, the Research Funding Team will submit the application on your behalf to the Funder before the deadline.

Please note:

  • Applications are required to be received on or before the above-mentioned deadline to allow sufficient time for the Quality Assurance (QA) process and any associated rework/revision of the application by the Principal Investigator.
  • The updated Council Award guidelines and LaTeX proposal templates will be made available on the Royal Society website next week.
  • The Marsden 2025 virtual roadshow will be held in the New Year. The Research Funding Team will send the details for this once confirmed by the Royal Society.
