Q&A with SFO's New Airport Director Mike Nakornkhet
In January, Mike Nakornkhet began as SFO Airport Director. A 25-year veteran of the aviation industry, Mike came to SFO from Denver International Airport where he served as Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President. Prior to this role, Mike spent 13 years with SFO’s Finance Division, with his last position as Acting Managing Director. We checked in with Mike about his return to SFO and new role as Airport Director: What are you looking forward to as Airport Director?
I look forward to working with the world-class team at SFO, our partners in the aviation industry, and the community to bring about transformative changes and ensure SFO remains a world-class gateway serving San Francisco. I’ve spoken with a wide array of stakeholders since my first day, and almost unanimously we are regarded as one of the best airports, if not the best airport in the country. What are some highlights from your first few months in this role?
I’ve focused on connecting with the entire organization. Starting with meetings alongside former Director Satero, engaging with the senior team who brought me up to speed on a variety of topics, Airport Duty Managers ensuring smooth operations in the terminals, project managers keeping our massive infrastructure buildout going, the ITT team transforming and securing our digital environment, and the Planning & Environmental Affairs team who have the vision for our future development. I’ve also met with our Employee Resource Groups and taken tours of the airfield and firehouses. It has been so informative and inspiring to witness SFO at its best. How would you describe SFO in three words?
Professionalism, commitment, and pride define SFO. It's clear to me that this airport is more than just a transportation hub. It's a community, a place where people come together to accomplish extraordinary things.

Terminal 3 Construction Update
SFO is in the midst of our Terminal 3 West Modernization Project, and we've got important updates on construction closures affecting guests' path of travel: - Beginning March 11, 2025, the Terminal 3 AirTrain bridge and tunnel will close due to ongoing construction. The AirTrain station remains OPEN and with alternate paths in place for guests:
- No bags to check? Get off at Terminal 2 AirTrain Station, cross bridge, and use the T2 Checkpoint
- Checking bags? Get off
at Terminal 3 AirTrain Station; go down one level and follow walkway to terminal; go down escalator and follow signs to either Premier or Economy check-in areas.
- Dropping off a passenger? Doors 6, 7, and 8 are closed at the Terminal 3 Departures curb. Consider dropping off friends and family at our Kiss & Fly area, located at the Rental Car Center, to avoid congestion.
- Parking at Terminal 3? The F Tunnel to the Central Parking Garage is closed - follow signs to the E Tunnel to navigate to the elevators.

SFO Museum: The AIDS Memorial Quilt
The AIDS Memorial Quilt is a powerful and heartfelt reminder of the ongoing epidemic. Guided by its foundational message of love and compassion, the Quilt raises awareness of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), the most advanced stage of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Through panel making and public displays, the Quilt promotes education to slow the spread of HIV/AIDS worldwide and encourages emotional healing for those affected by the disease. With the first panels stitched in the Castro District of San Francisco in 1987, this project has evolved into the world’s
largest community art project. Today, the Quilt spans nearly fifty thousand panels dedicated to more than 110,000 people who have died of AIDS-related illnesses. This pre-security exhibition brings a selection of six quilt blocks comprised of 36 panels to International Terminal Galleries 4B and 4C. The exhibition is on view to all Airport visitors through January 25, 2026.
