Understanding Skills When: 3 November 2021, 12:00pm - 1:00pm Are you aware of the skills you are developing throughout your research degree and how they relate to employability in both academic and non-academic environments? Do you know how to articulate your skills and how they will be a benefit to employers? This webinar, presented by Shari Walsh, focusses on building skills awareness and how to let employers know about your skill set. Register here. Working with your Supervisor (ECMS) When: 4 November 2021, 10:00am - 12:00pm The relationship you have with your supervisor is crucial in determining your PhD experience. They are your primary source of guidance as you undertake an individual research project and even the best student/supervisor relationships can experience periods of strain through the ups and downs of research. In this workshop you will learn what you can do to establish a positive working relationship with your supervisor and ultimately get the most out of your HDR experience. Register here. Planning your Next Career Steps When: 8 November 2021, 2:00pm - 4:00pm How do you plan and prepare for your next career steps after finishing your PhD? And how do you decide which career path is right for you - academia, government, industry or some other pathway? This interactive workshop will give you tools and strategies for tackling these questions based on your own interests, strengths and preferences. If you are unsure about preparing for life after the PhD, this event will help you start sharpening your focus and building the confidence to pursue a path best suited to your skills and priorities. Register here. Though delivered online, this is a workshop, not a lecture, and breakout rooms will be used so that students can interact with each other. Please ensure audio and video is configured so you can participate. We recommend using a laptop or desktop computer, not a phone for this to work well. Appropriate Citation and Avoiding Plagiarism When: 9 November 2021, 3:00pm - 5:00pm This session presents different types of in test and end of test citations. It explains how these aspects of research writing give credibility to a project. Further, by following the necessary protocols of research, writing citations assist in the avoidance of plagiarism. The session also covers intellectual property requirements and authorship issues. Register here. Learn to Program: Python When: 9-10 November 2021, 9:30am - 12:30pm Python has deservedly become a popular language for scientific computing, but getting started can be challenging, especially if you have never programmed before. That's where this introductory live coding workshop comes in, where we will use Jupyter notebooks to write programs and produce results. Register here. How to navigate an academic career When: 11 November 2021, 10:00am - 11:00am Are you wondering about the different career options available to you in academia, and how to navigate these pathways? This lecture offers an introduction to university-based careers and insights into the structures, dynamics and terminology you will encounter in the sector. It aims to provide clarity about career tracks and key issues to consider when it comes to developing your profile and track record to suit academic pathways. Register here. Sourcing Jobs Outside Academia When: 16 November 2021, 2:00pm - 3:00pm Where do you start looking for jobs? Seek.com? LinkedIn? Simply looking at generic job search engines may mean you are missing out on opportunities that align with your skills and experience. This workshop will guide you through a range of opportunities that may be available to HDR students and your specific skill set. You will be shown specific websites and alternative job roles, which could be useful during the job-hunting process. Register here. Data Manipulation and Visualisation in R When: 17-18 November 2021, 1:30pm - 4:30pm Do you have a good knowledge of the basic concepts and techniques in R and want to level up? In this workshop, you will learn how to use popular packages to manipulate, explore and get insights from your data, and how to visualise the results. Register here. Creating an Outstanding LinkedIn Profile When: 18 November 2021, 10:30am - 11:30am This session is intended to maximise your LinkedIn profile. Your LinkedIn profile is not just an online resume, it’s a way to access a global network of professionals with more than 300 million members. The first is a free Zoom to help researchers boost their track record.
