June Newsletter is here!

Welcome to the July newsletter! July has been the first month that Ben from the Carer Support Team delivered the Mental Health First Aid training which was a great success. We are also excited and getting ready to launch the first ever Arafmi Book Club in August! Things and the world around us continues to change but we will continue to support you in your caring role as best we can. We are always looking for new ways to be there for you along your caring journey, embracing change to create new beginnings!

If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact the Carer Support Team on 3254 1881 or via email carersupport@arafmi.com.au. We are looking forward to hearing from you!

Farewell Ruth

The wonderful Ruth is leaving us after 11 years with Arafmi. We would like to thank Ruth from the bottom of our hearts for all her amazing contributions to the team and to the carers she has supported along their journeys. Ruth (and her infectious laugh) will be missed but we wish her all the best for her future adventures with her family. We will be sure to stay in touch! Take care Ruth!

For carers who would like to say goodbye to Ruth, she will be holding the Coffee Connect at Jugar, 71 Jane St, West End on the 4th August from 8-10am. If you can, please come along and have a coffee and a chat with Ruth to send her off.

1000 Voices Survey

The Queensland Alliance for Mental Health (QAMH) and the Queensland Mental Health Commission (QMHC) have been working with Griffith University and QIMR Berghofer this year to undertake a systematic analysis of the mental health non-government community services sector in Queensland.

To further their understanding of the current environment, challenges and opportunities for the sector they are now launching a survey for both staff of NGO services and people accessing these services.

Their aim is to include 1000 voices from across Queensland in this landmark project.

Responses are anonymous.

West End Film Festival - Friday Flicks

Friday Flicks is about good times in unexpected spaces in West End. Think a carpark converted into a fully-fledged cinema space under the stars for an evening of family friendly local films from the West End Film Festival submissions. We've got you covered! AND since us Brisbanites don't like it too cold, we'll have heaters, but BYO your favourite polar fleece throwdown for extra snuggly comfort. Movie snacks at the event include popcorn, nibbles and choc tops.

Friday Flicks is brought to you by a wonderfully new formed friendship between the amazing folks at West End Film Festival and Arafmi. We are sponsoring the Best Family Category and we will be screening these as well as a handpicked selection of G rated films.

The invitation is extended to you, your family and your friends. We would love to see you!

Arafmi Carer Book Club

Arafmi is proud to launch our first online book club! We had such an incredible response to our Book Club announcement that we are running two sessions:

  • First Tuesday of the month  2 August, 6pm – 7:30pm
  • Third Monday of the month 15 August, 10am – 11:30am

A note for this first book club session – we acknowledge that we aren’t giving you much time if you want to attend the 2 August book club. You will have a short timeframe to source and read the book. We apologise for the inconvenience but in the future, we will give you more notice than three weeks.

We will be covering the same book club in each of these times, so please choose whichever time suits your availability. To register your attendance, please click the preferred time above.

The book we have chosen is: Back, After The Break by Osher Gunsberg

Arafmi Mental Health Carer Hub Fundraising Campaign

Arafmi is excited to announce that we have launched a fundraising campaign for our mental health carer hub! Last year we were fortunate to receive a Queensland government grant, allowing us to realise the dream of a dedicated mental health carer hub in Brisbane.

This hub will be a one-stop shop for unpaid mental health carers providing respite accommodation, workshops, counselling, support groups and more.

We are seeking donations to help us resource and furnish the hub and create a calm, tranquil, relaxing respite for mental health carers. Please share amongst your networks to help us spread the word!
