Newly canonized St. Carlo Acutis and St. Pier Giorgio Frassati have touched young people throughout the world with their faith, humility and relatability — they were only 15 and 24, respectively, when they died.
Their impact has also been felt in Hawaii, with many young people here finding inspiration in the saints’ brief lives.
In interviews with the Hawaii Catholic Herald before St. Carlo and St. Pier Giorgio were canonized Sept. 7 by Pope Leo XIV, officials with the Diocese of Honolulu and others connected to the islands’ youth and young adult faith community described the young men’s importance to the Catholic Church. Mercy Awakens Hope

From the Office for Social Ministry
“Mercy is the very foundation of the Church's life...The Church's very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love...Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope.”
~ Pope Francis, 2015 Jubilee Year of Mercy
Ten years ago in the Jubilee year of Mercy, Pope Francis called the Church to be a “field hospital” for wounded humanity, planting the seeds for this year’s Jubilee Year of Hope, now led by Pope Leo XIV. Both popes remind us that the Church’s mission is to walk with the afflicted — offering mercy that heals and hope that inspires. By emphasizing the importance of responding with compassion and spiritual guidance, these popes have called the Church worldwide to develop healing ways to welcome and embrace those who are suffering. ʻOhana Mass, Sep 27
|
 |
|
Saturday, September 27, 2025 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu
At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “ʻOhana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “ʻOhana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 p.m. at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.
Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

Saint of the Week
Saints Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn, Paul Chŏng Ha-sang, and Companions, Martyrs
Died 1839–1867
Memorial - September 20
From 1392–1897, the Great Joseon Dynasty ruled all of what is today North and South Korea. Though shamanism and Buddhism were among the religious beliefs of Koreans during that period, Confucianism was the main philosophical, ethical, and political system. Within that system, a clear hierarchy was established within the family and social structures, with the king on top. This class system was at the heart of their culture. Ancestors were also highly honored and even ritually worshiped, and various human virtues were emphasized, studied, and fostered. Read more...
