Our latest Visiting Scholar, Adam Bress, PharmD, MS (pictured below), spent time on the Pitt campus May 10-13 in a visit co-sponsored by the Pitt School of Pharmacy. Dr. Bress is a Professor of Population Health Sciences at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Bress delivered two seminars: “Intensive Blood Pressure Control: What We Have Learned, What Comes Next, and What Longitudinal Plasma Biomarkers in SPRINT Might Tell Us About Interactions with Alzheimer’s Pathology and Dementia Risk” and “From Idea to Award: Strategies for Successful Grantwriting.” He also delivered a research talk as part of VA Pittsburgh's Research Week and met with Health Sciences faculty and students to discuss shared interests. We look forward to future collaborations with Dr. Bress!

We are pleased to announce that the Developing and Evaluating a Machine-Learning Buprenorphine Care Discontinuity Prediction E-Tool (BUP-CARE) project has been funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), with CP3’s Dr. Jenny Lo-Ciganic serving as Principal Investigator at Pitt. Buprenorphine is an evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) that reduces overdose and mortality risk, yet more than half of patients discontinue therapy within six months of starting. BUP-CARE will develop and evaluate machine-learning algorithms and prototype a clinical decision support tool to alert primary care providers when patients are at high risk of discontinuing buprenorphine.

Drs. Walid Gellad and Courtney Kuza were pleased to represent CP3 at the College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD) Annual Scientific Conference in Portland, OR. Both took part in a mini-symposium, “Machine-Learning Approaches to Overdose Risk Prediction: Implementation Challenges and Lessons Learned,” alongside colleagues Dr. Brandon Marshall and Alexandra Skinner, MPH, of Brown Public Health. Their talk, “Implementing a Machine Learning–Driven Nudge Intervention for Opioid Safety in Primary Care: Lessons from mPROVEN,” shared lessons learned from deploying a machine learning model in the electronic health record.

A STAT article highlights major shifts in CVD prevention guidelines, including considering statins as early as age 30 and using updated risk tools. CP3’s Dr. Tim Anderson, interviewed for the article, notes the focus on balancing long-term benefits with risks and identifying high-risk patients earlier.
The University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) examined strategies to curb inappropriate antibiotic prescribing in dental care, a persistent driver of antimicrobial resistance and patient harm. CP3’s Dr. Katie Suda was interviewed, sharing insights on prescribing trends and stressing the need for clearer guidelines, clinician education, and system-level supports.

CP3 always has a good showing at the ISPOR (The Professional Society for Health Economics and Outcomes Research) annual conference, and this year was no exception. Not only did our machine learning expert Dr. Jenny Lo-Ciganic present as part of a panel on advanced AI methods (below, left), but she was also interviewed by ACCP Journals Podcast about her machine learning work to predict falls among older adults with depression. You can listen to the episode here.
Next, CP3 doctoral student Yilei Liu presented a poster on her research with Dr. Katie Suda (below, middle).
Finally, former CP3 Associate Director, Dr. Inma Hernandez delivered the plenary lecture, discussing US pharmaceutical policy (below, right).
