For more information on our work visit our website or follow us on Twitter @NCSEM_PAnews Study published on daily step count and biomarkers for heart diseaseProfessor Mark Hamer, Chair in Sport and Exercise Medicine at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH), has conducted a research project that has investigated the association between daily step count and biomarkers for heart disease. The research was conducted as several step-based daily targets have been widely circulated and communicated to the general public (e.g, 10,000 per day), but there was a lack of research and analysis performed of population-based evidence to support such guidance. To investigate this, Prof. Hamer and fellow researchers collected daily step counts in 4,665 middle aged adults from the UK via a wearable device. New WHO report: Europe can reverse its obesity “epidemic”The new World Health Organization (WHO) European Regional Obesity Report 2022, was published on 3 May by the WHO Regional Office for Europe. The report reveals that overweight and obesity rates have reached epidemic proportions across the Europe and are still escalating, with none of the 53 Member States of the Region currently on track to meet the WHO Global Noncommunicable Disease (NCD) target of halting the rise of obesity by 2025. Image © World Obesity Charity campaign aims to get 1 million children doing school sportThe Youth Sport Trust is asking teachers, parents, and organisations across the UK to help every child find a place to belong on National School Sport Week this summer. The UK is facing a ‘new pandemic’ of loneliness, rising mental health needs and childhood inactivity. In a bid to get more young people to have fun doing sport and find their place within it, the children’s charity has announced its annual campaign is back between 20 and 26 June. During School Sport Week, the charity will run a series of 60 second interactive challenges to help schools foster a sense of belonging and encourage children to have fun. Everyone who signs up to National School Sport Week will receive free resources from the Youth Sport Trust, including ideas on how to raise awareness of the importance of school sport and be an advocate for it, and invited to join in the fun ‘1 a Day’ physical activity challenges. The Walking and Cycling Index, the first report to include walking data, coming soonOn 18 May Sustrans, in partnership with 18 urban areas across the UK and Ireland, will launch the Walking and Cycling Index. The Walking and Cycling Index is the new name for Bike Life, the Sustrans assessment of cycling in urban areas that has been running for eight years Sport England Physical Literacy Stakeholder Engagement SurveyResearchers from Coventry University and Liverpool John Moores University are interested in hearing about current understanding and perceptions of physical literacy among the workforce and organisations/employers within the physical activity, sport, education, health, child, voluntary and community sectors. They want to learn about peoples understanding of physical literacy and what matters in helping children and young people to have a positive relationship with movement, sport and physical activity for life. UK Deaf Sport celebrate #DeafAwarenessWeek by sharing free resourcesWith Deaf Awareness week last week (2-8 May) UK Deaf Sport wants every deaf person to be active and inspired by sport and physical activity, and a lot of the activities out there can require some form of communication. To help you meet the communication needs of a deaf participant, UK Deaf Sport have developed an array of resources you can browse about deaf people experiences in sport, advice in communicating with a deaf person, and some useful signs for you learn. Spotlight on Swimming: Using the Primary PE and sport premium to tackle inequalities in swimmingAs a collaborative project, the Association for Physical Education, Youth Sport Trust and Active Partnerships have created a free resource as part of their Primary PE and sport premium commitment. This will support the workforce and encourage schools to spend some of their funding on improving swimming attainment, through additional interventions. COVID guidance for sport and physical activity for the UKWith Covid-19 restrictions being lifted across the UK, CIMSPA have put together a guide to help everyone in sport and physical activity understand what the latest government guidance is. The guide, which is updated regularly, contains the latest guidance and restrictions in the four home countries. Walking back to happinessMental Health Awareness Week 2022 is taking place from 9-15 May, with loneliness the focus of this year’s campaign. The Sport and Recreation Alliance is supporting the campaign to raise awareness of loneliness this week, and has been working with British Nordic Walking to demonstrate the benefits of sport and recreation on wellbeing. With National Walking Month also taking place during May, it is the perfect opportunity to highlight the benefits of the activity.
