Bishop's Homily for Trinity Sunday

Painting of the Holy Trinity in the Church of Saint Thomas (Kostel Svatého Tomáše), Prague by Karel Škréta (1610 - 1674). (Renata Sedmakova/Shutterstock.com)

[St. Joseph Church, Makawao]

Some years ago I led a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. I was shopping for a gift at an icon shop, and I selected the icon I wanted. The shopkeeper was a Muslim, and he could see I was a priest, so he said to me, “That one is the Holy Trinity. What’s the Holy Trinity?” I only had a couple of minutes before the bus was leaving, so I knew my answer had to be quick. I said, “It is one God, but three persons in one God, a community of love.” And he looked at me, puzzled, and said, “So they don’t fight?” I said, “No, they don’t fight. They are a community of perfect love.”

We celebrate this Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity once a year on the Sunday after Pentecost, but the Holy Trinity is a reality that is a part of our faith every day. One of my pet peeves, I must admit, is the way some people – even some priests – are so sloppy about making the Sign of the Cross. “I’ name ofda Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” I think this is an indication that we are not very aware of how the Holy Trinity is in our everyday lives. First Ohana in Christ Fundraiser Entering Final Stretch at 75% of Goal

By Patrick Downes
Hawaii Catholic Herald

Ohana in Christ, the Diocese of Honolulu’s parish-based fundraising campaign, entered its final month of its first year at 75% of goal, according to Mark Clark, the diocesan director of stewardship and development.

As of May 31, the diocese had received $845,000 of its $1.125 million target. The campaign ends June 30.

The campaign replaced the Bishop’s Circle, which collected primarily from individuals, to one that gave each of Hawaii’s 66 parishes an assigned goal of 25% of its annual “assessment” — the “tax” it pays yearly to the diocese to help cover diocesan operations.

Twenty-two parishes have already met their goals, said Clark, whose office is coordinating the campaign. The most recent are Our Lady Queen of Angels, Kula; St. Rita, Haiku; St. Roch, Kahuku; St. Theresa, Kekaha; and St. Theresa, Kihei. Read more...

Mentoring New Leaders for Social Ministry, Part Four

From the Office for Social Ministry

Session Three of GREAT CATHOLIC PARISHES is entitled: Great Parishes Excel on Sunday. It’s important that ministry leaders reflect on how their parish can, “become an inspiring community that buzzes with life and gives off a welcoming energy that attracts people.” Of those pastors interviewed, the majority responded that a vibrant hospitality is essential for experiencing a vibrant liturgy. Exceptional parishes train their hospitality volunteers and help to create the parish’s welcoming culture from the moment people arrive and until they leave. Does your parish reflect a welcoming culture? One best practice in this regard is to organize a team of volunteers, staff and clergy to greet and welcome people as they arrive at Mass. This same welcoming culture should also be evident with other liturgical ministries and with ministry leaders. Read more...

Saint of the Week

Saint Anthony of Padua
1195–1231
Memorial - June 13

Saint Anthony of Padua is a famous Franciscan saint especially honored at an impressive shrine in Padua, in Northern Italy. But he was not born as Anthony, was an Augustinian priest before he became a Franciscan, and was from Lisbon, Portugal, not Italy. Saint Anthony, along with Saint Bonaventure, another early Franciscan, lent theological heft to the somewhat esoteric movement founded by Saint Francis of Assisi. Saint Francis was uniquely sensitive and eccentric, unsuited to leadership, and vexed by the need to exercise authority. It was Saints Anthony and Bonaventure who gave the Franciscan Order credibility, who anchored it in sound theology, and who assured its survival and continued growth. Read more...
