[St. Marianne Cope Chapel, Honolulu (with Sisters of St. Francis); Sacred Hearts Church, Lanai (Confirmation & First Communion)]
“Do your homework!” “Turn off the video game while we are eating dinner!” “Go to bed now, because you have to get up early in the morning for school!” These are things we probably do not like to hear our parents say, because we are having just too much fun doing what we were doing without their interference. But we know that they do these things not to punish us but to show us their love and care for us, so that we can grow and develop into happy and responsible people. In a sense, we might say that your parents are being prophets, because a prophet is someone sent by God to bring us back to the right way, even when we would rather go our own way. A prophet speaks the truth of God, whether people want to hear it or not, because he knows that living in God’s truth is the best thing for us. Read more...

Bishop Silva’s Required Letter of Resignation
From the Office of the Bishop
At the age of 75, a bishop is required to submit to the Pope his letter of resignation from the office he holds. Bishop Silva will turn 75 on August 6, 2024, and his letter will be mailed on that day. The Hawaii Catholic Herald, however, has requested that Bishop Silva read and sign his letter publicly before it is sent. He will do so immediately after he celebrates the 12:00 noon Mass on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace (the feast day of Our Lady of Peace). All are invited to witness this historic event.

Tears and laughter echoed through the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa in Honolulu June 27 as people celebrated the life of Father Alapaki Kim, who was loved by many across Hawaii and was a strong advocate for the recognition and inclusion of Native Hawaiian traditions and culture in the church.
Father Kim, who was pastor of St. Rita Church in Nanakuli before retiring last year, died May 8 in Keaau, on Hawaii island, at age 71.
During his wake, members of Father Kim’s ohana, including his parishioners, took turns sharing loving memories they had with the energetic priest. Read more...

Franciscan Sisters Celebrate 20 years of Unity
|
|
|
Mother Marianne is seen at far right with other sisters at Kapiolani Home, which she founded on Oahu to care for female children of Hansen’s disease patients. Accompanying Mother Marianne, from left, were Sisters M. Rosalia McLaughlin, M. Martha Kaiser, M. Leopoldina Burns, M. Charles Hoffmann and M. Crescentia Eilers. Behind them stands Walter Murray Gibson, prime minister of the Hawaiian kingdom. (Archive Photo)

Hawaii Catholic Herald
Isle Catholics might recall that Mother Marianne Cope, whose tireless and loving ministry to Hansen’s disease patients in Hawaii helped elevate her to sainthood, was a Franciscan sister of the Sisters of St. Francis of Syracuse, a city in upstate New York.
St. Marianne didn’t just personify the compassion and humble service for which Franciscans are known; her arrival with six other sisters in 1883 laid the groundwork for the Sisters of St. Francis of Syracuse in Hawaii, where they’ve become a crucial part of the community. From health care to education to caregiving, many generations of isle residents have benefited from the sisters’ presence.
Nowadays, you will no longer find the Sisters of St. Francis of Syracuse except in historical documents. That’s not to say they’ve gone away — rather, they’ve returned to their roots as part of the greater Sisters of St. Francis community, which got its start 169 years ago in Philadelphia. Read more...

Prayer Intention for July: Pastoral Care of the Sick
|
|
|
(ImagensstockBR / Shutterstock.com)
From the Office for Social Ministry
We pray that the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick confer to those who receive it and their loved ones the power of the Lord and become ever more a visible sign of compassion and hope for all.”
- Pope Francis’s Prayer Intention for July 2024: For the Pastoral Care of the Sick
As summer brings warmth, love, and joy into the lives of many, it also can contrast with the reality for those who are sick and alone, feeling isolated and forgotten. Pope Francis’s special prayer intention for the month of July focuses on the pastoral care of the sick and how we can be more compassionate with those who are suffering from illness. In his message titled "It is not good that man should be alone: Healing the Sick by Healing Relationships" for the 2024 XXXII World Day for the Sick, Our Holy Father reminds us of a central truth–that we were all welcomed into the world, made for love, and called to fraternity and communion; “this project of communion is so deeply rooted in the human heart.” It sustains us, especially during illness and vulnerability: “It is the first therapy we must adopt to heal society's diseases in which we live.” Pastoral care of the sick involves us in
caring for relationships with God, family, friends, healthcare workers, all creation. Pope Francis asks, "Can this be done?" and answers with a focal point of his work Fratelli Tutti - Brothers and Sisters All: "Yes, it can be done, and we are all called to ensure it happens." We are all called to be more like “the Good Samaritan” who slows down, draws near, and tenderly cares for the suffering stranger. Read more...

ʻOhana Mass, Jul 27
|
|
|
Saturday, July 27, 2024 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu
From the Office for Social Ministry
At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “’Ohana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “‘Ohana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.
Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

Oahu: Saturday, August 17 at 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
St. Stephen Diocesan Center, Kaneohe
This session with presenters Paul & Sarah Jarzembowski will guide participants and facilitate dialogue around unpacking “moments of return” throughout the year, such as Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, and Easter, as well as weddings, baptisms, and funerals. We will also explore some less-obvious “moments” that reveal an overlooked abundance of occasions and opportunities upon which pastoral leaders, families, and concerned churchgoers can build. As Pope Francis notes, these “moments” can offer people “wellsprings of new life,” especially when we respond with intentionality, pastoral care, and a missionary spirit.

Saint of the Week
Saint Augustine Zhao Rong and 119 Companions, Martyrs
1648–1930
Memorial – July 9
The 120 saints we honor today spilled their blood for the faith during the four centuries that followed. The first to be martyred was Father Francisco Fernández de Capillas, a Spanish Dominican priest. Father de Capillas spent his first two decades as a priest working in the Philippines as a missionary. In 1642, Father de Capillas arrived for his final mission in mainland China. He and his companions worked fervently for the next several years, winning over many converts and even establishing a lay order of Dominicans. In 1644, the less-tolerant Qing Dynasty replaced the Ming Dynasty, immediately threatening the missions. In 1647, Father de Capillas was captured, imprisoned, and tortured. Read more...
