Wednesday indoor bowls at KohiAs any Aucklander knows, the winters in the City of Sails can be long, wet and windy. And chilly. And sometimes really, really cold. Most clubs continue with all-weather play, and the region is lucky that the number of accessible covered greens is also encouraging more year-round play. What about Indoor Bowls to keep bowlers active, progressing and involved with their clubs? At Kohimarama Bowling Club, members and non-members were invited to “grab a drink and a rink” for Wednesday night Indoor Bowls. We had fun – just small groups sometimes, but we found from talking to other clubs that it is what it is – sometimes two people, sometimes eight, sometimes 18. It was fitting that Sandy and Di, “The Dynamite Dames” were the top team in our end-of-series Drawn Pairs event held Wednesday, 26 July. Sandy and Di were new to Kohi last year, through winter indoor bowls and then became members, The Dames are among our most consistent attendees of the indoor squad, The trophy is part of the club history, established from the days of the Mission Bay Women's Bowling Club. A pizza feast, supported by Sal's Pizza Mission Bay, topped off a satisfying and saucy season. -- Cynthia Morris Te Atatu & Hobsonville's Matariki Open FoursTe Atatu Bowling Club and Hobsonville Bowling Club celebrated Matariki together by co-hosting its second Matariki 2023 Open Fours Tournament on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 July 2023. The Tournament was once again a huge success with a total of 128 players battling it out on the bowling greens to win the Matariki Cup and prizes. The tournament provided the opportunity to come together through the game of bowls and to Manawatia Matariki (Celebrate Matariki) by:
Day one of the tournament started with a karakia for both greens to acknowledge that Matariki will be at the heart of this tournament. The tournament ended with all teams playing in the finals at Te Atatu Bowling Club. The tournament winners were a formidable team from Royal Oak. The Cup sits on a carved base depicting the Matariki (mother) and her six daughters being the seven stars of Matariki. This was carved for the inaugural tournament by a local carver MTatua Billy Smith. Following the prize giving the event ended with a closing karakia then the hakari (feast) of hangi, seafood, fried bread, steamed pudding and salads. A fitting way to end the two-day Matariki celebration of bowls with superb games by all teams who participated. We look forward to next year's event which will be held on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 June. A big acknowledgment to the volunteers at both bowling clubs who came from their respective communities to support the cause - their commitment, energy, and efforts to support clubs and organisations like ours is truly appreciated. Ngā mihi to our sponsors we will not be able to run our tournaments without your generosity: Te Hononga o Tamaki me Hoturoa Trust, Fence Master, Bowls NZ -- Marion Hakaraia Matariki Open 4s 2023 Champions Marty Dickson, Gavin Brown, Colin Ayris-Webster and Kevin Dickson.
