Recycled glass gets new life at CPACConstruction of the Cairns Performing Arts Centre (CPAC) is surging ahead. The dual-theatre complex is about 18 per cent complete. The walls to the studio and the lifts are nearly finished and the auditorium walls have started to go up. The reinforced concrete frames for the tiered seating will be installed in the next few months and the structural steel for the roof and façade will be onsite within weeks. An interesting feature is that the project is using more than 1.5 million glass bottles collected through kerbside recycling. ReGlass is a product made by Cairns Regional Council by crushing recycled bottles and can be used in place of sand in construction projects. Around 300 tonnes of ReGlass will be used at CPAC - equating to about 5000 wheelie bins full of recyclable bottles. About 90 per cent of the materials and services for CPAC are sourced locally and 95 per cent of trade contracts are with local businesses. It's expected to open in mid-2018, weather permitting. Read more about CPAC's progress. FROM TOP: The view from above; Mayor Bob Manning onsite with FKG Operations Manager Barry Smith; ReGlass is shifted into place on the construction site. Two brand new, full-size rectangular playing fields will be constructed along Petersen Road for use by both junior and senior rugby league.
