FROM THE DESK OF PCSC GENERAL MANAGER ADRIAN MOSES
Hello everyone,
As the school year completes, I’d like to take the opportunity to recognize the members of the Paradise Coast Sports Complex team that support us every day. Back in 2022 we announced our partnership with the Collier County Public Schools Greater Achievement Through Empowerment (G.A.T.E) transition program.
This program places students with learning disabilities into work-study environments preparing them for transition out of a school life into the employment pool with experience gained in authentic work setting.
We began this with dedicated educators Kim Dewey and Kelly Stevenson-Crews initially as a one day per week program where we had members of the G.A.T.E team assist the Complex staff with the variety of tasks that we have to complete to prepare the facility for use.
However, we mutually agreed that there was more opportunity to engage more students, and our proximity to Golden Gate High School meant that we were able to move to a full 5-day per week schedule.
The students helped with tasks including learning how to:
- Prepare fields for different sports
- Clean and sanitize food and beverage equipment
- Assist with equipment maintenance
- Tend to and beautify landscaping features
- Assisted with St. Matthew's House Food Distribution
Through the program we have hired 2 of the students to the Paradise Coast Sports Complex, Chris Isabella was the first and more recently Robbie Barnicoat has joined my already excellent team.
The G.A.T.E program first looks to serve the students and through our participation we have found even more purpose in living our mission of “improving the health and economic vitality of the communities we serve”.
We hope all the students enjoy the summer vacation and we are already looking forward to having them back when school starts again.
