[Sacred Hearts Mission Church, Kapalua (Observing First Anniversary of Lahaina Fire)]
When I meet people who visit Hawaii for the first time, I am often asked if I ever take the incredible natural beauty of the islands for granted. While I still marvel at the beauty, I must admit that seeing it for the 600th time is not the same as seeing it for the first time. There is a certain freshness of vision that, while not disappearing entirely, can be greatly diminished.
Perhaps this was the case with the beautiful town of Lahaina. And it was not only its natural beauty that was attractive; but the beauty of neighbors, of work, and of the simple comforts of home were also treasures that we appreciated. But perhaps they were not as much appreciated as when they were suddenly taken away in last year’s devastating fire. Now they are only memories – often very painful memories – of what was. But I dare say, even those memories are treasures that bring us hope and joy. And in the days since the fire, other beautiful things have been revealed: the outpouring of prayers and support from people all over the country and the world; the donations of supplies, services, and money that flowed in from caring, though unknown, neighbors; the stubborn hope expressed in restarting a school that had been destroyed; the consistent hope of continuing to gather as a community
for worship; the resilient vision that looks forward to rebuilding and renewing the life of a suffering community and not giving up on its future. Read more...

Bishop Larry Silva signed his resignation letter July 9 at the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace after celebrating Mass. (Celia K. Downes / Hawaii Catholic Herald)
By Celia K. Downes
Hawaii Catholic Herald
Bishop Larry Silva has had a busy summer.
He’s celebrated Masses for sacraments of initiation and of ordination; traveled to the mainland for meetings; and returned to Hawaii for more meetings and services both celebratory and commemorative.
It’s no wonder Bishop Silva will spend his 75th birthday this year with family in California, relaxing after many bustling weeks that culminated in mid-July with the historic National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis.
This is no ordinary birthday year, though. For bishops and archbishops across the globe, age 75 marks a momentous transition in their vocation: It’s the age at which they must submit their resignation to the pope. Read more...

Sacred Hearts School Celebrates New “Temporary” School in Ka’anapali

From the Office for Social Ministry
"If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy." - 1 Corinthians 12:26
Just a year after being displaced from the wildfires that destroyed its classrooms in the historic town of Lahaina, Sacred Hearts School (SHS) officially opened its brand-new doors at a beautiful Kaanapali campus on August 2, 2024. In a special blessing ceremony, Principal Tonata Lolesio set the tone for the celebration by quoting the above scriptural passage, emphasizing the importance of all being parts of one Ohana in times of suffering and joy. She graciously thanked the whole SHS Ohana for working together through the challenges of the past year saying: “We were of one heart in the Lord in our response to the needs of others, the true spirit of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.” This blessing marked a new beginning for the parish school, which was founded by the Fathers and Sisters of the Sacred Hearts 150 years ago, and further developed by the Sisters of St. Francis, who were
all profoundly influenced by the lives of Saints Damien and Marianne. “Nothing is impossible,” Tonta said, echoing the spirituality of Hawaii’s two beloved saints. “With God all things are possible.” Read more...

This session with presenters Paul & Sarah Jarzembowski will guide participants and facilitate dialogue around unpacking “moments of return” throughout the year, such as Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, and Easter, as well as weddings, baptisms, and funerals. We will also explore some less-obvious “moments” that reveal an overlooked abundance of occasions and opportunities upon which pastoral leaders, families, and concerned churchgoers can build. As Pope Francis notes, these “moments” can offer people “wellsprings of new life,” especially when we respond with intentionality, pastoral care, and a missionary spirit.

|
Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu
From the Office for Social Ministry
At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “’Ohana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “‘Ohana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.
Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

Saint of the Week
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
First Century
Solemnity – August 15
Traditionally, today’s Solemnity has been referred to variably as the Blessed Virgin Mary’s rest, birth into Heaven, entombment, and falling asleep. The earliest written references to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary date back to the third and fourth centuries. In the seventh century, Saint John Damascene wrote beautifully about the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in three sermons. He also narrates a story about the Roman Emperor Marcian (c. 392–457) who approached the bishops at the Council of Chalcedon in 451, requesting information about the location of the body of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The emperor wished to build a magnificent church in her honor. Read more...
