September 2023

It's been a busy beginning of the month finalising the program for the Early Career Teachers Conference, getting the call for workshops & sponsorship opportunities for the STEM Conference up on the website and uploading a few more chapters of the Stage 2 Topic Videos. 

We've also confirmed some workshops in the Northern Territory in October and a Leading in Science Workshop in November. Check out all the details below.

Early Career Teachers Conference

Program and registration now available!

A Conference for teachers in their first five years or
new to teaching Science/STEM.

Teachers will be able to select to attend 4 different hands-on workshops delivered by inspiring and expert teachers across the day. Plus a share-a-thon, where each presenter will share a strategy or tool during a 10-minute presentation and delegates will rotate around the room.

You don’t have to be an early career teacher; all teachers will find new ideas and approaches to engage and motivate them in the varied conference program.

SHE Task Workshop - Thursday 5 October

This workshop is aimed at people who want to further their skills in setting, assessment and providing feedback on the SHE task. It also will cover the writing and marking of SHE questions for tests and examinations. There will be time to examine your own student work and participate in some cross-moderation and marking of work/drafts.

Design & Deconstruct - Friday 6 October

This workshop is aimed at people who want to further their skills in setting, assessment and providing feedback on the D&D + practical report task. It also will cover the writing and marking of practical questions for tests and exams as well. There will be time to examine your own student work and participate in some cross-moderation and marking of work/drafts.

Friday 17 November

This session is intended for people who are current science department leaders or aspire to be one! Come along and network with other like-minded individuals whilst learning some new skills which might help you either in your current role, in the future or to further enhance the learning and teaching at your school.

The 2023 theme ‘STEM Connections’ supports the connection between maths and science, industry connections with STEM learning in schools, the convergence of industry and technology, the emergence of AI and other new technologies and their connection to STEM learning, as well as ongoing partnerships between STEM professionals and teachers in school and more. Stage 2 Topic Videos | NEW

SASTA is excited to present a new product available for teachers and students in 2023! Keeping pace with the way students learn, SASTA is developing a suite of high quality videos covering all topics in SACE Stage 2 Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Each video is between five and ten minutes and covers one or more concepts in the Science Understanding section of the Subject Outline.

2023 i3 Teacher Award Winners

The I-Cubed Awards, a national science competition celebrating inquiry, innovation and ingenuity, of Australian school students, held its inaugural awards ceremony on 29 March 2023, recognising the brightest young minds in science and technology.

Congratulations to Rachel Pillar from Kangaroo Island Community Education for winning the ‘Passionately Curious’ Regional Teacher Award! Find out all the details here. 

 

CSIRO’s STEM Professionals in Schools

CSIRO’s STEM Professionals in Schools is a national volunteer program that has operated since 2007 to partner STEM professionals from industry, universities and government departments with primary and secondary school teachers.  

There is no cost to the school or teacher. All STEM professionals registered with the program hold valid Working with Children/Vulnerable People Checks. 

STEM Professionals and teachers to work together to build a collaborative professional partnership; this may involve mentoring and planning support for teachers, specialist project support for students, career talks, or assisting with hands-on activities to get students engaged in STEM subjects.  

This video showcases how a STEM Professionals in Schools’ partnership can enhance STEM engagement in the classroom.

SACE Board of SA

The SACE Board is seeking teachers and education leaders who are interested in joining us as Education Consultants. We currently have vacancies in our Science and Mathematics Faculty and are keen to hear from innovative educators looking for an opportunity to work with other educators across SA, NT and with our international partners. 

The Education Consultant is responsible for the strategic development, recognition and implementation of curriculum, assessment and quality assurance.  They bring subject expertise and build strong partnerships with schools to ensure maximum positive impact on students’ ability to thrive. Toyota Community Trust STEM Teachers Scholarship

The Public Education Foundation’s Toyota Community Trust STEM Teachers Scholarship supports public school teachers across Australia involved in all aspects of STEM teaching.

Nine scholarships are available nationally, each of which will provide $10,000 per scholar to cover the cost of pursuing professional development courses in STEM-related subjects.

MentorEd

Educators SA has launched a new mentoring program MentorEd SA designed to support and connect educators in South Australia.

They are looking for members who can volunteer as mentors to one or more graduate or early career teachers in Science.

As a mentor, you can be based anywhere in SA, including Adelaide, and have expertise in primary or secondary or both.

Participation is free for both mentors and mentees with the costs being entirely funded by Educators SA.

First Aid Training

11, 12 and 13 October

Do you need First Aid training? For the first time? A CPR Refresher? 
We are offering 3 trainings in 1 day- choose to stay for a part of or the whole day depending on your training needs.

The day will allow participants to gain National accreditation and certification in all 4 of:

  • 009 CPR  (yearly refresher of CPR) $65 
  • 9.00 am -11.00 am 
  • 010 BELS includes Asthma, Anaphylaxis, and stroke $95
  • 9.00 am -1.30 pm
  • 011 and 012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting $190
  • 9.00 am – 5 pm
