Funding Opportunities

Pitch Your Own Immersive Fellowship (PDF)

Students can create an immersive fellowship with 501(c)(3) organizations in the social impact sector, public sector institutions, or industry. Applications will be reviewed, and grants awarded, on a rolling basis and as long as resources last.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to schedule a consultation with Dr. Marques Redd, Senior Director for Graduate Advising and Engagement for the Humanities (marques.redd@pitt.edu) to discuss the viability of their prospective project. Additionally, applicants considering projects with organizations in the Pittsburgh region are requested to contact Dr. Redd first, so that he can help orient you to pre-existing contacts and liaise appropriately. Learn about the projects doctoral students did last year.

Immersive Dissertation Research Fellowship

This innovative, competitive two-term research fellowship supports Humanities dissertation projects that involve substantial professional development and will likely result in dissertation formats other than the conventional proto-monograph. Ph.D. students are expected to embed themselves within, or otherwise collaborate intensively with, institutions or communities as part of their Ph.D. research. For questions about eligibility and application requirements, students should contact their DGS. Applications are due February 1, 2022. For previous awardees' reflections on the curricular design experience and their syllabi, please see the Faculty Summer Stipends for Curricular Innovation page.

Amanda Awanjo

Student Spotlight: Amanda Awanjo

By working on a directly community-focused project, I felt the presence of the community of artists and my responsibility to them constantly. This connection concretized the importance of my work with archives.

For her summer 2021 immersive, Amanda Awanjo (English) used skills she gained from her graduate study in a community-focused and public facing way. She coordinated an archival exhibition publication to coincide with the Women of Visions: Celebrating 40 Years exhibition at the University Art Gallery. Read her reflections on how her experience fundamentally changed how she understands the role of archives and is impacting her postdoctoral career plans.

Director's Tip of the Month

This month I would like to bring to your attention our list of innovative dissertations. Humanities Engage seeks to empower students to explore the spectrum of possibilities for dissertations in their areas of research and to expand the options for the media and formats of Ph.D. capstone projects, in addition to the conventional proto-monograph. We have collected examples of innovative dissertations that are already being pursued both locally and nationally. These dissertations include digital-only or hybrid digital/analog components, documentary films, podcasts, comics, projects incorporating digital humanities, community-engagement, and much more.

If you would like to discuss your dissertation or our Immersive Dissertation Research Fellowship, please email me at marques.redd@pitt.edu, and we can make an appointment.

All the best,

Marques
