Webversion COMPETENCE IN PAPER NewsletterApril 2021 From the officeDear ZELLCHEMING members and friends, The corona pandemic still influences the planning and activities of our association ZELLCHEMING. Since already in 2020 no annual general meeting could take place, the board has decided to hold the next general meeting online in the run-up to the ZELLCHEMING Virtual Days. Please note the following date for this: 08 June 2021 - 16.00-18.00 hrs. As usual, you will receive the invitation with the agenda, election proposals and motions in good time by mail. Here you will also be informed about the technical procedure. ZELLCHEMING Virtual DaysOn June 9 and 10, the 1st ZELLCHEMING Virtual Days will feature a wide-ranging program of keynote speeches, keynote presentations and panel discussions. From the industryEuropean paper recycling proves highly resilient - despite severe global dislocationCepi, the European association representing the paper industry, has been closely monitoring market developments in response to the import ban imposed by Chinese authorities on material waste, including paper for recycling, the diversion of global paper flows for recycling, and structural changes in paper consumption and collection during the Covid 19 crisis. Although secondary commodity markets are inherently volatile, it is emphasized that there is healthy demand for paper for recycling in Europe and globally. Even in the face of severe global disruptions, the value of recycled paper to the recyclable paper industry allows its collection to remain sustainable in the face of only short-term imbalances in supply and demand. To maintain this resilience in the face of major external disruptions, the European paper industry's message remains unchanged and independent of short-term fluctuations in commodity markets: separate paper collection at source ensures good quality paper for recycling, which is in demand by the European paper industry, which has worked to increase paper recycling rates over the past two decades. Cepi welcomes the fact that some countries where separate collection of paper and cardboard is not yet fully implemented are now following suit and introducing separate collection of paper and cardboard at source, at household level. It also accompanies structural developments, such as changing consumption habits for publication papers and related impacts on the replenishment of recycling loops with virgin fibers. At the same time, more and more consumer products are being packaged with sustainable fiber-based solutions that make a valuable contribution to the paper recycling loop. Against this backdrop, Cepi has launched the 4evergreen Alliance to ensure that all fiber-based packaging is designed for recyclability, collected separately, sorted and effectively recycled in the paper industry. From the membershipMetsä Spring and Valmet to build demo plant for 3D fiber productsMetsä Group's innovation company, Metsä Spring, and Valmet are building a demo plant in Äänekoski, Finland. The plant will produce new 3D fiber products for food packaging and other purposes. The main equipment, supplied by Valmet, will be installed in the fall of 2021, and the first test runs are scheduled to begin in late 2021 - about 12 months after construction begins. The demo plant will produce wood-based packaging that can replace plastic and aluminum packaging. According to the project partners, the products are renewable, recyclable and biodegradable, and the raw material comes from sustainably managed forests, most of which are owned by Finnish private individuals. There is already a great demand for the products, which could increase in the future. If it can be proven that the manufacturing method and product work well, a larger production unit could be built next to Metsä Group's bioproduct factory, for example. ABB's digital solutions, process expertise and data analytics feed into new research projectAs one of the most energy-intensive manufacturing sectors, the paper industry has ambitions to achieve climate protection targets while maintaining competitiveness and long-term employment. The Model Paper Factory, founded in Düren, Germany, brings together stakeholders from across the paper industry with the aim of designing more energy-efficient and future-proof paper production. As contributors to the transformation of the modern paper mill, ABB specialists will focus on developing digital solutions that deliver real customer value. By leveraging technology, analytics and deep process expertise developed over decades of service to the industry, ABB is well positioned to help society - and the global pulp and paper industry - improve productivity and efficiency. "Automation and digitalization are essential elements for a sustainable future," said Alexander Fach, Technology Manager, Process Industries, ABB. "As a partner, we will bring our expertise in these areas to the Model Paper Factory, transforming ideas into new realities and working with visionaries, engineers and experts to shape the paper industry of tomorrow.
