New book release: Cathy Ward’s Liberty Realm

Cathy Ward is soon to release a new book, Liberty Realm, documenting the fascinating phantasmal worlds in her work.

About the book:

Pulsing and surging with dark energies, Cathy Ward's mesmerising drawings capture a restlessly inquiring spirit through the meticulous rendering of organic forms. Their mystery, emotional depth, and enveloping sensuality recall an occluded art-historical canon of weird psychedelia, hermetic alchemical illustrations and outsider horror vacui.

Liberty Realm presents a broad survey of works ranging from the acclaimed drawings exhibited recently in “Phantasmata” at The Good Luck Gallery (Los Angeles), “Talespinning” at the Drawing Center (New York), “Romantic detachment” at PS1 MOMA (New York), and "Utopia" at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center (Sheboygan, Wisconsin), to new explorations and insightful glimpses of her earlier output and formative practice. Substantial essays by Edward Gómez, Doug Harvey, and Robert Wallis further untangle these fascinating phantasmal worlds.

Published by Strange Attractor Press, there will also be a limited edition release of  20 hard-back books that come with a framed drawing. It can be ordered now from the publisher's site (strangeattractor.co.uk) and is available for pre-order on Amazon.

Short film "Transromantik" by Cathy Ward and Eric Wright

Julia Sisi: Art from quarantine and beyond

While isolated due to COVID-19, self-taught folk artist Julia Sisi has continued working on her visionary drawings, and shared some pre-quarantine pieces inspired by both inner travel and external travel; mountain and island landscapes as well as the night sky.

“The Healer”, acrylic and ink on canvas 31.4" × 43.3", 2020

This was made during the Covid-19 pandemic while in quarantine and reflects my experiences during these days of self-isolation. It is autobiographical, translating into images my feelings as a human living in this strange, suspended time. It's a visual journal of the lockdown times. I started this drawing on March 20, and finished it on May 4, 2020.

“Inner Travel”, acrylic and ink on canvas 31.4" × 43.3", 2019

Inner travel... because as human beings, we are a mysterious, unexplored, infinite universe to discover.

“Inner Sky”, acrylic and ink on paper 16.5" × 23.2", 2020

Night, constellations, lucid dreams. I always start the drawing at the bottom, and it grows from there. I don't have a previous idea, I don't make decisions. I just let the lines flow on the black surface. When I feel the drawing is finished, I wait for a few minutes until the drawing itself says its name, its title. So I write its name on the mouth (as if the face was introducing itself). At that moment the work is finished.

“First Water”, acrylic and ink on paper 11.8” × 15.8”, 2020

Mountain spring water, always new water. We don't know where it comes from, we don't know where it will go. At this moment it’s here, in an infinitesimal succession of present moments.

“Morpheus Dream”, acrylic and ink on canvas 31.4" × 43.3", 2019

I was living on the island of El Hierro in 2011, when there was an underwater volcanic eruption. We had thousands of earthquakes, the sea turned green and was full of floating igneous rocks. At night the magma was visible, still on fire, leaping skyward from the deep sea, like huge bonfires flying in the dark.
