Bishop's Homily for Pentecost Sunday

[St. Joseph Church, Makawao (Confirmation & First Holy Communion); Maria Lanakila Church, Lahaina (Confirmation & First Holy Communion); St. Anthony Church, Wailuku (Confirmation & First Holy Communion)]

Someone recently pointed out that at its very beginning, the entire Church of Jesus Christ fit into one room, a room we hear about in today’s reading, where the disciples of Jesus were gathered with Mary, his mother. Now there are 1.4 billion Catholics in the world, and who knows how many more Protestants and others who believe in Jesus – not to mention the billions who have been his followers over the past twenty centuries. How did such a rapid growth in believers happen? You just heard the story of how it happened! The Holy Spirit came on the scene in a dramatic way, and sent that little band of apostles out, speaking every language of the world, to proclaim the Good News of Jesus. And we are part of that communion of saints that proclaims that Jesus is Lord! Read more...

Safe, Secure, Spacious: Sacred Hearts School Marks One Year in Kaanapali

Sacred Hearts School’s journey of faith, determination and resilience in the wake of the devastating 2023 Lahaina wildfire led last year to the west Maui resort town of Kaanapali, where the community has settled into a temporary location with new facilities and a stunning view.

For students, faculty and staff — who were uprooted when their school was largely destroyed near its mother church, Maria Lanakila, and who spent the 2023-24 academic year in makeshift accommodations at Sacred Hearts Mission Church up the coast in Kapalua — the new campus has been “an answered prayer,” said Principal Tonata Lolesio.

“Coming out of classroom tents, we were just hoping for the basic necessities of a campus, and really we received more than we prayed for,” she said. Read more...

Pope Leo XIV Calls for Compassionate Unity and Justice

(beeboys / Shutterstock.com)

From the Office for Social Ministry

“In this our time, we still see too much discord, too many wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, the fear of difference, and an economic paradigm that exploits the Earth’s resources and marginalizes the poorest. For our part, we want to be a small leaven of unity, communion and fraternity within the world.” - Pope Leo XIV, homily, May 18, 2025

In his first homily as Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV offered a heartfelt message about being a loving Church in missionary service and inclusive unity. Addressing more than 200,000 Jubilee year pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square, he reminded all that the Church should not be about power, but about walking in fraternal compassion with others, especially those who are suffering and vulnerable. In a recent letter to Congress, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) echoed Pope Leo XIV’s message by urging passage of a budget that truly supports the flourishing of families, without harming the poorest and most vulnerable… including our immigrant brothers and sisters, and our environment.” The letter was signed by bishops elected to chair six of the most important committees in the USCCB. Some of their key concerns include:

Care for the poor. The U.S. Bishops point to the nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation report that says the current budget bill “will raise income taxes on the working poor while simultaneously providing a large tax cut for the wealthy." Read more...

Talks for Youth and Adults, May and June

Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays during June
at 6:00 p.m.
St. Michael the Archangel Church, Kailua-Kona

All are welcome to join these talks on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6-7pm at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Kailua-Kona. These talks will be given by the missionary team of the Neocatechumenal Way in Hawai’i: Jonathan & Nazarena Stenger with their seven children, Fr. John Wadeson, Benjamin Paz a seminarian for the Diocese of Philadelphia, and Paulo Da Mata a seminarian for the Diocese of Brooklyn.

These talks are an announcement of the Good News where Christ has an answer to the difficult situations we experience and gives us the possibility of love and forgiveness. This itinerary of Catholic formation lived in small communities within the parish will help us to discover the richness of our baptism. The Catechism of the Catholic Church 1231 states that by its very nature infant baptism requires a post baptismal catechumenate. Not only is there a need for instruction after baptism but also for the necessary flowering of baptismal grace in personal growth.

For more information, please contact Jonathan and Nazarena Stenger at (808) 268-3993.

These “ʻOhana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.

Saint of the Week

Saint Anthony of Padua
1195–1231
Memorial - June 13

Saint Anthony of Padua is one of the most revered saints within the Catholic Church. He was born in Lisbon, Portugal and was given the name Fernando Martins de Bulhões. His parents were wealthy nobility who provided a good education for him as a youth, most likely at the Cathedral school in Lisbon. At the age of fifteen, Fernando decided to enter religious life and joined the Canons Regular of St. Augustine, not far from his home. During his two years with the canons, he excelled in his studies and prayer. However, being so close to his home led to frequent visits from family and friends, prompting Fernando to desire greater solitude to more deeply embrace his vocation. Read more...
