Champ of Champs

This weekend is the first of Auckland's Champ of Champs series, kicking off with Men's & Women's Singles.

The greens will be full of talented Singles bowlers who will be vying for championship titles.

Singles involve different tactics than when you are playing in a team. You have to effectively play the roles of skip, lead, second, and third yourself - you don't have the advantage of a skip reading the head and telling you which shots to play. It requires tactical thinking as well as skill to win.

The state and pace of the green, wind direction, your favoured hand, your own and your opponent’s strengths and weaknesses, and how to use your shots to the best effect - these are all tactical factors to be aware of. You will look for advantages in jack placement and building the head to help you win. It's all very exciting!

To everyone competing, good luck. There have been some updates, so please click here to view the updates...

Epsom's new green

25 April 2023
It has been a busy week at Epsom Bowls with the installation of new greens! A Green is almost complete, and hopefully, B Green will begin next week. We hope to continue to keep one green open at all times for players and functions, but a lot depends on the weather and Tiger Turf's progress.

Bowls Auckland has recently advised our grant application to Rawhiti Trust has been approved. A big thanks go to Adele for making the application, Bowls Auckland for their assistance, and Rawhiti Trust for their approval.

Grants received - $30,000 from Bluewaters Community Trust, $25,000 from the TAB and $50,000 from Bowls Auckland's Rawhiti Trust. Therefore, our Grants total is $105,000, which is a great help towards the rebuilding of our new greens.

We have a large amount of leftover carpet from the new greens, so please let us know if you are after any off-cuts.

The green has the new turf, just the surrounds to do and on to B Green!

Champs run in the family

A quick shout-out of congrats to Auckland and NZ U26 representative David Motu - his mum, Mea was crowned International Boxing Association’s world super bantamweight title in Auckland on Thursday night. You must be so proud.

Here's an NZ Herald article about Mea's title win...

Maraetai's community bowls

On the afternoon of Anzac Day, we held an open tournament for the club and community.

Some 42 players were on the green in 14 Triples teams. Entry fees of $5.00 per head were donated to the RSA.  It was a great day all around, finishing with a sausage sizzle, prizes, and raffles. Locals want it to run again next year.

ANZAC Triples at Glen Eden

Glen Eden Bowls and Glen Eden RSA came together to commemorate ANZAC on Tuesday, 25 April. It was chilly to start, but the sun was out for the commemoration. The formalities began at 9am with the raising of flags followed by the President of Glen Eden RSA delivering the ANZAC ode.

It has been a long time since we joined together for this event, and we hope to see it continue in the coming years.

Following the commemoration, it was time for bowls! 16 teams participated, including a combined team from Pukekohe & Hunua Bowls, Epsom, Ellerslie, Rocky Nook, Pt Chevalier, Bowls Orewa, and of course, our own Glen Eden teams. A special thanks to Grey Lynn Bowls, who entered at late notice, to avoid a bye.

Results of the day:
Two teams had 3 wins, so the ends or points would make the difference. We had a few teams with 2 wins, but only one could take third place - with one point being the decider. The remaining went into the "pick off the table" for consolation chosen by Kerry Kirwan.

Winners: Phil Metcalfe, Wayne Russell & Phil Aitken (picture 1)
Second: John Morris, Dave McFadyen & Murray Upton (picture 2)
Third: Keith Prosser, Mike Petley & Richard Salter (picture 3)
