Champ of ChampsThis weekend is the first of Auckland's Champ of Champs series, kicking off with Men's & Women's Singles. The greens will be full of talented Singles bowlers who will be vying for championship titles. Singles involve different tactics than when you are playing in a team. You have to effectively play the roles of skip, lead, second, and third yourself - you don't have the advantage of a skip reading the head and telling you which shots to play. It requires tactical thinking as well as skill to win. The state and pace of the green, wind direction, your favoured hand, your own and your opponent’s strengths and weaknesses, and how to use your shots to the best effect - these are all tactical factors to be aware of. You will look for advantages in jack placement and building the head to help you win. It's all very exciting! To everyone competing, good luck. It was chilly to start, but the sun was out for the commemoration. The formalities began at 9am with the raising of flags followed by the President of Glen Eden RSA delivering the ANZAC ode. It has been a long time since we joined together for this event, and we hope to see it continue in the coming years. Following the commemoration, it was time for bowls! 16 teams participated, including a combined team from Pukekohe & Hunua Bowls, Epsom, Ellerslie, Rocky Nook, Pt Chevalier, Bowls Orewa, and of course, our own Glen Eden teams. A special thanks to Grey Lynn Bowls, who entered at late notice, to avoid a bye.
