2024 Diversity & Inclusion Week Wrap Up

Thank you to all who attended and participated in this year's Diversity and Inclusion Week. This school-wide celebration of the broad range of identities and experiences that make up our diverse community included engaging lectures, the DOM's Health Equity Day, cultural activities, an art gallery, and a block party—all to help advance the SOM from "Being to Belonging," which was this year's theme!

"My parents’ journeys have taught me that there is always more than meets the eye. Their struggles and sacrifices have shaped me to become the person I am today. I remain committed to trying to individualize patient care with their social background and limitations in mind, as well as recognizing my implicit biases and trying to mitigate them as I go." —Tina Hang, MD

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. In celebration of the diversity of our community, as well as promoting awareness and learning, the School of Medicine spotlights faculty and staff. This month's AAPI spotlight was DOM faculty member, Dr. Tina Hang! Click below to read her full spotlight interview.

Kimberly Manning, MD, delivers commencement address at Medical College of Georgia

On May 9, 2024, our very own RYSE Vice Chair, Kimberly Manning, MD, (General Internal Medicine), gave the commencement address at the Hooding Ceremony for the Medical College of Georgia (MCG), a particularly notable honor as she was chosen by the MCG students to be the keynote. As many of you know, the Hooding Ceremony formally acknowledges and celebrates the achievements of graduating medical students and signals another step in their careers as they recite the Hippocratic Oath and are officially welcomed into the medical profession.

Reminder: Emory Media Relations Policy

Are you interested in serving as an expert when journalists have a question about your specialty? If so, please complete this interest form, and we will send your information over to our colleagues at the Woodruff Health Sciences Center's Media Relations Team.

Also, as a reminder, all faculty members must notify the WHSC Media Relations Team BEFORE speaking to the media. The WHSC media team helps faculty by vetting publicity opportunities and ensuring that they are worth the faculty member's time—and if they are, the team can schedule and help the faculty prepare for the interview.

If not appropriate, they will speak with the media and turn them down on the faculty member's behalf. The team also helps arrange staff interviews, make sure everyone has given photo consent, if appropriate, and follow up with reporters, as needed. For more information, please review the university's Faculty Handbook's Media Policy.
