RYSE ANNOUNCEMENTSDOM RYSE hosts the 4th annual Health Equity DayThe Department of Medicine’s RYSE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council hosted the fourth annual Health Equity Day last Tuesday, May 21. The virtual conference included poster presentations, keynote presentations, and awards. More than 180 members of the DOM and Emory communities attended to share compelling new findings, facilitate scientific exchange, and identify opportunities for collaboration. This school-wide celebration of the broad range of identities and experiences that make up our diverse community included engaging lectures, the DOM's Health Equity Day, cultural activities, an art gallery, and a block party—all to help advance the SOM from "Being to Belonging," which was this year's theme!
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. In celebration of the diversity of our community, as well as promoting awareness and learning, the School of Medicine spotlights faculty and staff. LGBTQ+ Health Policy and Advocacy: LGBTQ+ Health Policy and Advocacy: Tools for Engaging in Health Activism Save the date! Join us next month to hear from featured speakers, Cassie Grimsley Ackerley, MD, MSc, (Infectious Diseases), and Jenny Besse, CPNP-PC, (Children's Healthcare of Atlanta), during the LGBTQ+ Health Policy and Advocacy: Tools for Engaging in Health Activism event. Call for Nominations: LGBTQ+ Pride Month Next month is LGBTQ+ Pride Month and the SOM needs your spotlight recommendations! The SOM continues its celebratory initiative to acknowledge the diversity of the community and promote sharing, awareness, and learning. They are seeking self-nominations (can be anonymous) and/or peer nominations of faculty and staff members, who are willing to share their stories. The deadline to submit is May 31. Kimberly Manning, MD, delivers commencement address at Medical College of Georgia On May 9, 2024, our very own RYSE Vice Chair, Kimberly Manning, MD, (General Internal Medicine), gave the commencement address at the Hooding Ceremony for the Medical College of Georgia (MCG), a particularly notable honor as she was chosen by the MCG students to be the keynote. As many of you know, the Hooding Ceremony formally acknowledges and celebrates the achievements of graduating medical students and signals another step in their careers as they recite the Hippocratic Oath and are officially welcomed into the medical profession. DOM ANNOUNCEMENTSThe DOM announces the retirement of Monica Farley, MD Please join the department in congratulating Monica M. Farley, MD, Director of the Division of Infectious Disease, Jonas A. Shulman Professor of Medicine, and previously a Staff Physician at the Atlanta VA Medical Center, on her upcoming retirement. Dr. Farley plans to retire on August 31, 2024, after an impressive 40-year career at Emory University, the Atlanta VA Medical Center, and Emory Healthcare. After retiring from Emory, Dr. Farley has plans to travel, catch up on reading, do volunteer work, and spend less time at a computer and more time with her family, including her four young grandsons. After Dr. Farley's retirement in August, Wendy Armstrong, MD, will serve as the Interim Division Director for Infectious Disease. The search for Dr. Farley’s permanent replacement will begin soon. More details will be provided as they become available. Jada Bussey-Jones, MD, begins term as Society of General Internal Medicine President Former RYSE Vice Chair, Jada Bussey-Jones, MD, FACP, (General Internal Medicine) officially started her term as President of the Society of General Internal Medicine at their National Meeting in May. SGIM is a member-based internal medical association of over 3,300 of the world’s leading academic general internists, who are dedicated to improving access to care for all populations, eliminating healthcare disparities, and enhancing medical education. SGIM's mission is to cultivate innovative educators, researchers, and clinicians in academic general internal medicine, leading the way to better health for everyone. If so, please complete this interest form, and we will send your information over to our colleagues at the Woodruff Health Sciences Center's Media Relations Team. Also, as a reminder, all faculty members must notify the WHSC Media Relations Team BEFORE speaking to the media. The WHSC media team helps faculty by vetting publicity opportunities and ensuring that they are worth the faculty member's time—and if they are, the team can schedule and help the faculty prepare for the interview. DOM Honors & Recognitions Congratulations to Dimitri Cassimatis, MD, (Cardiology), for receiving the 2024 Evangeline Papageorge Award. This award and honorarium are given each year during the School of Medicine's diploma ceremony to a medical faculty member whose intellectual luminosity has generated the greatest excitement about learning among students and colleagues. Without question, the Papageorge Award has become one of the most prestigious awards presented by the School of Medicine or Emory University. Read more and view past winners.Tiffany Walker, MD, (General Internal Medicine), received the #MEAction Wilhelmina Jenkins ME/CFS Service Award. This award honors Wilhelmina Jackson, who has 40 years of experience in advocacy for ME/CFS (Myalgic encephalomyelitis/Chronic fatigue syndrome), a disease that can be very disabling for people and can last life-long in many. Dr. Walker was honored for her efforts to improve awareness and treatment of ME/CFS and to better understand the overlap between Long COVID and ME/CFS. Learn about #MEAction. The Emory Diabetes Education Training Academy, led by Guillermo Umpierrez, MD, (Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Lipids), and Ina Flores, recently received the Aspid SILVER European/Spanish Education award. An Aspid is an award recognizing professionals with products of service in the healthcare field who have achieved something notable and demonstrated qualities and skills by producing an exceptional campaign within the sector. Curbsiders TEACH Podcast features Shelly-Ann Fluker, MD, MHS Shelly-Ann Fluker, MD, MHS, (General Internal Medicine), was recently featured on the Curbsiders TEACH Podcast. She was joined by Jen Olenik, MD, (University of Pennsylvania) and Carolyn Chan, MD, MHS, (University of Cincinnati College of Medicine) with the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine. These physicians discussed innovative educational techniques, including gamification and other strategies to engage learners. As well as their favorite workshops on feedback literacy, reducing bias in didactics and assessment, remediation in clinical reasoning, and addressing professionalism with a growth mindset! In Case You Missed It: Wear Blue Day 2024 Our Emory Critical Care team turned their ICU blue at Emory University Hospital on Friday, May 17, in recognition of "Wear Blue Day" and National Critical Care Awareness and Recognition Month.
