Follow along with RYSE as we honor and celebrate those who have contributed to Emory DOM and provide some snapshots of Black History here at the DOM. You can find weekly highlights and fun facts in the DOM newsletter as well as on our socials. This week's Black History Month spotlight is Jada Bussey-Jones, MD, FACP. Read more below! Dr. Bussey-Jones currently serves as the chief of general internal medicine, associate dean for professional development at Grady, and last year made Emory DOM history after receiving the Carter Smith, Sr. Chair in Medicine award. With only about 2% of faculty nationwide identifying as Black women, and even fewer holding endowed chair positions, Dr. Bussey-Jones' appointment is a testament to her resilience and commitment to excellence; and also paves the way for those who come after her. Celebrating Heart Month: Heart to Heart Conversation Series In recognition of Heart Month, Emory Heart & Vascular kicked off their immersive new venture, the "Heart to Heart" conversation series. This series incorporates photos, stories, and videos in concert to showcase 16 free-flowing conversations between team members all across the service line. View compelling interviews between the following physician pairings, many of whom are DOM faculty members!
Vincent Marconi, MD, featured by Emory News Center: "Emory researcher imagines a new approach to the science of aging"As a medical researcher, Vincent Marconi, MD, (Infectious Diseases) was always suspicious of the idea that healthy aging could be achieved through traditional doctoring alone. Over time he came to increasingly believe in maintaining a strong connection between mind, body, and spirit. A holistic approach to aging that considers aging humans through multiple perspectives at once, including the biomedical, behavioral and the social and physical environment. Now Dr. Marconi, a professor in the School of Medicine’s Division of Infectious Diseases and professor of Global Health in the Rollins School of Public Health, is spreading that concept further. He recently co-edited a special issue that publicly challenges biomedical research’s traditional focus on individual aging-related diseases such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and dementia in favor of science that examines healthy aging perspectives across the whole human animal.
