The role of the CEO is to carry on the inspiring legacy of Ms Marie-Louise Corkhill, the founding staff member and Executive Director of Karinya House. Ms Corkhill retired on 25 March 2022 after almost 25 years of extraordinary caring service during which time Ms Corkhill was recognised as the ACT Woman of the Year in 2017. Karinya House will always be thankful to Ms Corkhill for her dedication and service. We also thank Ms Corkhill, who will remain on the Karinya Committee and will always be a valued Friend of Karinya. Lavinia Tyrrel will join Karinya House in February 2023, following the impending birth of her second child. You can read more about Lavinia and the leadership changes at Karinya House at the link below. Welcome Lavinia! Ms Belinda Munn will be interim CEO for the intervening period, with our gratitude. May - Celebrating all WomenA placeholder really – with updates to come. The upcoming month of May for Karinya House is our annual celebration of women, with you our Karinya Village. We all know amazing women and at Karinya we have the privilege of meeting amazing women every day. Given the work of Karinya House, Mother’s Day is also a particularly significant day, recognising this day can mean something different to every woman for many different personal reasons. The May appeal is our largest annual appeal and supports the service beyond the current financial year. Watch this space for more information on Karinya’s May 2022 Celebration of Women! Snippets....Karinya House has been working with two of our Friends, Shelley Thompson (Experience 360) and Chris Nightingale (Ponda Consulting) to chart the journey experienced by the women we walk alongside. We call this "Erin's Journey" - from homelessness to independence. These are some of the quotes from women interviewed as part of the Journey Map process. We thank each and every woman we walk alongside for allowing us to share their path for a while. We have mapped the journey across 6 stages. The snippets here are about the first HELP stage of the journey. At this stage, *Erin realises that she cannot change her situation by herself... over the next few newsletters we will share words from Erin across all stages of her journey. "I was just trying to survive." "I didn't have any emotional support." "My identity was stripped down to nothing." "My life was totally unpredictable, chaotic, abusive in every way, shape and form. I was aimless with no direction." "I was really depressed, and I was hiding it from everyone." "You're so broken as a person. Anyone who is in destitution or in poverty, there's got to be some reason as to why. I think a lot of that has to do with your mental health and that has a lot to do with your experiences and what has happened to you." #humansofkarinya #ourvillage #supportingwomen #walkingalongside #erinsjourney 💜🌸 *Erin is not one woman. The name, which comes from one of our early founders, is representative of the thousands of women we have walked alongside in the last 25 years. Hunting and gathering for Easter 🐇Our wonderful Nichola, (Caseworker) has embarked on a gathering expedition for Easter eggs, baskets and craft supplies to support the annual Karinya House Easter Egg Hunt! If you would like to share some Easter love with us, your contribution by way of a small donation can be made online today. (toward the costs of Nichola's expeditions!). All Used Up!A shout out to StreetSmart Australia and their Cafe Smart program in 2021, and thank you to all participating cafes. We received a grant of $1,750 allowing us to purchase, in January, giftcards for essentials (food and fuel) to be given to women across the summer season. So wonderful to have this contribution as part of our support services for women. Gift cards are magical, supporting independence and choice with respect and recognition. As of last week, all gift vouchers had been used. We all recognise the current pressures on the costs of living, particularly for the women we support. We have had to purchase new stock. If you would like to support the purchase of gift cards for women now and into the future (food and fuel) please do make a small donation online today, or make your donation in May 2022, as part of our Month of May appeal. Thank you Marie-Louise!On Saturday 26 March 2022, the Karinya Committee, staff and volunteers gathered to celebrate almost 25 years of service for women in our region, given by our Executive Director, Marie-Louise Corkhill. We know there are many women across Canberra, who like us, have been thankful to have had Marie-Louise walk alongside in each of our respective life journeys. We also know our Karinya Village joins with us in thanking Marie-Louise for her extraordinary service each and every day for so many years in so many ordinary ways, and wishing Marie-Louise all the best of joy, peace, family and friends over the years ahead, amidst the stuff of life. You can read more at the link below which includes a link to a wonderful video featuring our dear Marie-Louise (from years past and with thanks to the ever wonderful Missing Bits Productions.) Thank you Sharwood Hampers!Karinya has partnered with Sharwood Hampers since the lovely Sharon Isherwood started this very local enterprise in 2017/2018. Every hamper sold supports Karinya House and as the business grows the annual donation to Karinya House also grows. Sharon and her Sharwood team (and family!) must be exhausted. The donation we have received recently from 2021 sales is over $6,000. It is double the donation received last year from the 2020 sales. We congratulate Sharwood Hampers on their wonderful business, which supports and celebrates all things local. And we are thankful to be a part of this collaboration! We give thanks ....To Hands Across Canberra and all who partnered with and supported the 2022 Canberra Giving Day Appeal. A touch over $10,000 was raised for Karinya House! Thank you to each and every donor who supported us and to all who supported so many community services across our Region. To our Karinya Gardeners/Handypersons who make such a difference to our Home. We have recently welcomed a couple of new "Outdoor" volunteers following a recent appeal. The garden team is very much appreciated, as are our very select number of spectacular volunteers who make a difference many a day of each week. To all the women who welcome us to walk alongside with them. Our residences are full at present. The women being supported in the community are at also at capacity. We continue to touch base with women who are waiting for us to be able to provide full support. You are strong women, inspiring women!. #supportingwomen #standingalongside #ourvillage #ourcommunity We acknowledge the Ngunnawal and Wiradjuri people, and other traditional custodians of the lands across which we work and live. We pay respect to Indigenous Elders past, present and emerging. Sovereignty has never been ceded. It always was and always will be, Aboriginal land. |
