This Girl Can publishes guide to recruiting female volunteersThe award-winning This Girl Can campaign has published guidance on how to boost female volunteer numbers in the sport and physical activity sector. Marking Volunteers’ Week, the ‘Guide to recruit and retain female volunteers’ highlights key principles and learnings in how to avoid what Sport England has found is a common problem – attracting and retaining female volunteers. A Sport England-funded project recently revealed that a key partner organisation was struggling in their female-only volunteer programme. Further research found this organisation to not be alone in their troubles, as such they’ve worked with partners to collate best practice from across the sector about helping sport and physical activity organisations recruit and retain more women volunteers. The blueprint is based on the Open Doors programme, which was designed with Nike and forms part of ukactive’s Schools As Community Hubs policy. It represents a universal model for unlocking the sports facilities on the doorstep of every community, providing essential support for children and young people’s physical, mental and social wellbeing – particularly for those from low-income households. The document is a practical resource aimed at schools, local authorities, activity delivery partners and funding organisations, offering best-in-class guidance from the Open Doors programme, which has proved successful in London, Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester. Sector leaders call for urgent action from Government as energy costs put leisure facilities and pools at risk of closure within six monthsA coalition of leading bodies in the physical activity sector has written to the Government calling for urgent support to save leisure facilities from going under as they face a rise in energy costs of up to 150% on last year. ukactive, the Local Government Association, the Chief Cultural and Leisure Officers Association (CLOA), Swim England, the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA), the District Councils’ Network (DCN) and Community Leisure UK (CLUK), sent a letter on Monday to Michael Gove and Nadine Dorries – the Secretaries of State for the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport respectively. In the letter the organisations issue a stark warning about the consequences if facilities do not receive urgent relief from the Government. In a survey of ukactive members, public leisure operators were asked about the impact on their facilities if there is no financial support to mitigate against the increases and projected increases to energy costs over the coming months. Up to 79% of public leisure facilities say that without support they are ‘likely’ or ‘extremely likely’ to cease operations within the next six months. Primary PE and Sport Premium Research StudyUniversity of Cambridge researchers are currently looking for primary school teachers who have done some form of PE or sports-related CPD this school year for a study on the Primary PE and Sport Premium. The study consists of a short survey that can be found at the link below: Latest Annual Disability and Activity Survey goes live on 8 JuneActivity Alliance Annual Survey was launched in 2019 to provide a greater understanding about disabled people’s attitudes towards and involvement in sport and physical activity. More than 1,800 disabled and non-disabled adults aged 16+ took part in the largest survey of its kind, from October to December 2021. Now, in its third year, the survey plays a crucial role as it helps to uncover the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on disabled people’s motivations and ability to be active. It outlines the top recommendations that if actioned can help to change attitudes towards disabled people and ensure inclusive practices are embedded across the sector.
