Bishop's Homily for the Solemnity of Christ the King

[Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa (Vietnamese Holy Martyrs Catholic Community), Honolulu]
Last weekend I attended the National Catholic Youth Conference with about 3,000 youth, including about 30 or so members of the Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Movement. At that Conference, a young high school Senior gave a moving testimony. Since he was a boy, he loved football, and he could never play enough. He longed to be a professional football player as an adult. He had an extremely successful football “career” in high school, becoming the varsity quarterback early in his sophomore year. He was admired by the coaches and other other players, and, of course, was very popular at school. He was also a very devoted Catholic, and his faith was always very important to him. Read more...

Being part of a supportive network can play a crucial role in helping people thrive in their faith and in the church.
For the past 25 years, the Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Movement has provided that very environment for one of Hawaii’s many enthusiastic ethnic communities.
The group, known as VEYM, is based within the Vietnamese Holy Martyrs Catholic Community, which calls the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa in Honolulu home.
Ann Tran has long been involved in VEYM and is currently president of its Hawaii chapter, Anre Dung Lac, which is named for St. Andrew Dung-Lac. Read more...

Giving Thanks for Those Who Witness Through Their Lives
|
|
|

From the Office for Social Ministry
“Gratitude, the ability to give thanks, helps us appreciate the presence in our lives of the God who is love and to recognize the importance of others, overcoming the dissatisfaction and indifference that disfigure our hearts.” ~ Pope Francis, homily during the canonization of missionary St. Giovanni Battista Scalabrini.
For Catholics, every November begins with the celebration of All Saints Day honoring persons who inspire us to live our faith. In Hawaii we remember the missionary saints, Fr. Damien and Mother Marianne. Another missionary saint is Giovanni Battista Scalabrini, known as the “Father of Migrants.” A 19th-century Italian bishop, Scalabrini was dedicated to serving the needs of marginalized migrants. During Scalabrini’s canonization, Pope Francis praised him for “giving thanks” for migrants, quoting the saint saying “precisely because of the migrations imposed by persecutions, the Church pressed beyond the confines of and of Israel, and became ‘catholic’ thanks to the migrations of our own days, the Church can be an instrument of peace and of communion among peoples.” Read more...

Prayers for the Advent Season
|
|
|
(Kara Gebhardt / Shutterstock.com)
From the Hawaii Catholic Herald
FIRST SUNDAY (DECEMBER 1, 2024)
On the first Sunday of Advent, the family gathers to bless the wreath. The leader, usually the father, sprinkles the wreath with holy water.
Leader: Our help is in the name of the Lord.
All: Who made heaven and earth.
Leader: Let us pray. O God, all things are made holy by your word. Pour forth your blessing upon this wreath. Grant that we who use it may prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ and may receive abundant graces from you through Christ, our Lord.
All: Amen.

Beginning the Church's liturgical year, Advent (from, "ad-venire" in Latin or "to come to") is the season encompassing the four Sundays (and weekdays) leading up to the celebration of Christmas.
The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on Christmas.

"Do Whatever He Tells You" Advent Spiritual Retreat, Dec 13-15
|
|
|
Friday, December 13 - Sunday, December 15, 2024
St. Anthony Retreat Center, Honolulu
Basic Christian Community of Hawaii presents "Do Whatever He Tells You" an Advent Spiritual Retreat. When we are constantly on the go, there is not much time to think about the things that are truly important in life. At the wedding at Cana, the Blessed Mother says to the servants who are gathered in Jesus' presence, "do whatever He tells you." (John 2:5). On a BCCH retreat weekend, experience peace and solitude to hear God speak to your heart and renew your commitment to be a follower of Christ and to do His will.
This two-night advent retreat for adult men and women will led by spiritual directors, Very Reverend Msgr. Gary Secor of the Diocese of Honolulu, and Sr. Meristella Umdor, a Missionary Sister of Mary Help of Christians.

Decree Concerning the 2024 Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception
|
|
| |
From Most Reverend Clarence (Larry) Silva
Bishop of Honolulu
General Decree Concerning the 2024 Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
While this very important celebration is usually on December 8, since that is a Sunday of Advent this year, all the Masses for December 7/8 must be for the Second Sunday of Advent. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is transferred to Monday, December 9. Although the Paulist Press Ordo says it is not a day of obligation this year, in order to give due honor to our national patroness, and since the Diocese of Honolulu only observes this Solemnity and the Solemnity of Christmas as holy days of obligation, I hereby decree that the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is to be celebrated on Monday, December 9, 2024, as a HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION in the Diocese of Honolulu. Pastors are to schedule Masses so that all may observe this holy day of obligation and to publicize that it is a holy day of obligation well in advance of December 9. Any Vigil Mass celebrated on
Sunday, December 8 is to be a Mass for the Second Sunday of Advent, not for the Immaculate Conception.
This decree is to be promulgated as law through publication in the Hawaii Catholic Herald and in the diocesan eNews.
Given at the Office of the Bishop on September 26, 2024.

Solemnity of Christ the King
Last Sunday in Ordinary Time
November 24, 2024
Our liturgical year is ordered in such a way as to lead us through the entire mystery of salvation won for us in Christ. Each liturgical year begins with Advent, when we ponder the Incarnation that leads us to the celebration of Jesus’ birth at Christmas. Following Christmas we enter into the public ministry of Christ during Ordinary Time, which begins with the feast of His Baptism. In the midst of Ordinary Time, we enter the deepest paschal mystery of Lent and Easter, culminating with the Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. The Easter Season concludes with Christ’s Ascension and Pentecost, the beginning of the Church. Finally, after the rest of Ordinary Time, we come to the great Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, commonly referred to as the Feast of Christ the King. Read more...
