Mānawatia a MatarikiTwinkling in the winter sky just before dawn, Matariki (the Pleiades) signals the Māori New Year. The appearance of Matariki heralds a celebration of renewal, reflection, and connection with both the past and the future. It's a special moment to come together with loved ones, share stories, and enjoy kai.
Fitting FinaleLast weekend, the final two events for the 23-24 season (excluding WinterClub) concluded with the crowning of the Auckland Men’s Centre Fours and Auckland Men’s 1–5-Year Singles champions. Stephen Campbell (Howick) and Peter McConnell (Royal Oak) faced off in their Singles final, picking up from where they left off two weeks ago in their respective semi-finals. The match drew a spectacular crowd, with Royal Oak supporters fresh from their AGM and Howick Bowling Club members rallying to support Campbell after postponing their AGM. Like Fine ChinaTraditionally celebrating a 20th anniversary one would give fine china. Still, for Mike Galloway, Chris Lowe and Martin Dixon it is their fourth Gold Star, awarded for winning 20 centre titles in Bowls Auckland Centre events. You hear the stories from smaller centres of players who have insanely large numbers of centre titles, David File of Gisborne East Coast has well over 85 now, Peter Doreen in the Far North has more than 40, Ray Park from Whanganui got his 69th title in September 2023. While it doesn’t for one second take away the magnitude of their success, in a centre with the population of Auckland, the odds are far less favourable. Celebrating Excellence: Highlights from 2024 AwardsAs another thrilling bowls season concludes, it’s time to reflect on the remarkable achievements and contributions that have enriched our Auckland bowls community.
