[Saints Peter & Paul Church, Honolulu (Confirmation & First Communion)]
Did you ever have the experience of hearing spooky stories at night? We tend not to sleep very well, tossing and turning, thinking that terrible things could happen to us. Maybe we would rather not be alone and want the protection of someone else, just in case we become one of the characters in a spooky story. Sometimes this is just in our imagination, and we eventually realize there is no real threat to us. But sometimes there really is a person who is out to get us, who would like to take away our peace and our confidence in God, and that person is Satan. He was there at the beginning of creation, when he tempted Adam and Eve to disobey God. He was there in the lives of some of the people Jesus met, and Jesus cast out these demons from them. They led people to do sinful and terrible things, and they were a fright to all around them. But
Jesus had the power to cast them out. Even then, Satan, in his very tricky ways, was there to cause others to accuse Jesus of casting out demons by the power of Beelzebul, or Satan, the Master of demons. This was the argument Jesus had with these people. Read more...

Perhaps fittingly, the Diocese of Honolulu’s latest priestly ordination occurred on the eve of the weekend marking the feast of the Holy Trinity.
Fitting because Bishop Larry Silva ordained three deacons who have spent years in prayer and preparation for the momentous occasion.
Bishop Silva ordained Kurt Meyer, Francis Hai Pham and Anthony Tran on May 24 at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa in Honolulu. The men made their priestly promises in front of their families and friends, as well as faithful from across the diocese.
“Pure joy enveloped me as I nervously pondered whether this incredible moment was truly happening,” said Father Tran. Read more...

From the Office for Social Ministry
“The poor and the earth are crying out. O Lord help us to protect all life, to prepare for a better future, for the coming of your Kingdom of justice, peace, love and beauty. Praise be to you! - “Laudato Si’ On Care for Our Common Home” - Pope Francis (May 24, 2015)
When Pope Francis released his encyclical Laudato Si nine years ago this May, he had the inspiring intention of echoing the teachings of his patron saint to protect and care for each other and our common home, listening to the voice of the most vulnerable in “the cry of the poor and the earth.” Laudato Si was inspired by a song composed by St. Francis of Assisi in the 13th century called the Canticle of the Sun which pays tribute to God, our creator through the repetition of the Italian phrase, “Laudato Si” or “Praise be to you.” The song in essence praises the Lord for the creation of the sun, moon, stars, wind, water and earth–and likens these elements to siblings in a shared family under God to emphasize our interconnectedness as one ‘ohana. Pope Francis’s Laudato Si, which calls
for a major global shift in producing a better future for all in our common home, is still generating talk story sessions and pastoral collaborative action around the world. Read more...

ʻOhana Mass, Jun 22
|
|
|
Saturday, June 22, 2024 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu
From the Office for Social Ministry
At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “’Ohana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “‘Ohana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.
Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.
For more information, please call the parish office at (808) 734-0396 or email rafmendoza@rcchawaii.org.

Saint of the Week
Saint Barnabas the Apostle
Early First Century–c. 61
Memorial - June 11
Saint Barnabas, originally named Joseph, was born on the isle of Cyprus and was a Jew of the tribe of Levi (see Acts 4:36). Nothing else is known about his early life. During Jesus’ public ministry, Joseph became His fervent follower and might have been one of the seventy-two disciples whom Jesus sent out on a mission (see Luke 10:1–24). After Pentecost, as the Church in Jerusalem began to grow, the Apostles changed Joseph’s name to Barnabas, which means “son of encouragement.” His name change might have occurred because Barnabas supported the Church
when he “sold a piece of property that he owned, then brought the money and put it at the feet of the apostles” (Acts 4:37). This is the first mention of Barnabas in the New Testament. Read more...
