RYSE ANNOUNCEMENTS

Celebrating DOM's Black History

This year, to honor Black History Month we will be celebrating Black history here at Emory Department of Medicine. Follow along with RYSE as we honor and celebrate those who have contributed to Emory DOM and provide some snapshots of Black History here at the DOM. You can find weekly highlights and fun facts in the DOM newsletter as well as on our socials.

This week, we will spotlight, Martin Luther Campbell, MD, Internal Medicine Chief Resident at the Emory University Hospital. Read more below!

A first-generation college graduate, Martin Luther Campbell, MD, currently serves as the first Black Internal Medicine Chief Resident at the Emory University Hospital site. His passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion has led him to serve in a variety of other capacities as well, including co-president of the Churchwell Diversity and Inclusion Collective (CDIC), diversity chair of Emory's House Staff Organization, and resident liaison for the GME Trainee DEI Taskforce. His commitment to excellence and health equity guides his impactful work and professional endeavors as he takes the next steps in his medical training journey, starting his cardiovascular disease training as a clinical cardiology fellow at Emory this Summer.

DOM RYSE welcomes Zanthia Wiley as associate vice chair

"My vision is to keep building off of the exemplary foundation that has already been set by RYSE.  In RYSE we “Represent, Support, and Elevate." Our incredible council is committed to just that. We are about people. All of our DOM people – trainees, faculty, and staff.  One of my personal dreams for RYSE is to expand research exposures and opportunities for all of us.  The first ten years of my career were committed entirely to patient care (as a hospitalist) and I value that time immensely.  Now, as a clinical researcher committed to health equity, I have the best of all worlds. The honor to care for individual patients, the golden opportunity to affect populations as a clinical investigator, and a voice for community outreach."
—Zanthia Wiley, MD, FHM, FIDSA

In Case You Missed It: Hamilton E. Holmes Lecture

Last week, the Office of the Dean and the Office of Multicultural Affairs for Emory University School of Medicine hosted their annual lecture in honor of Hamilton E. Holmes, MD, the first African American to graduate from Emory School of Medicine. This year's program, I Am My Ancestors' Wildest Dreams,' reflected on the unique journeys of Black males in medicine working to foster health equity.

Speakers included DOM faculty member and associate program director, IM residency program, Colin Washington, MD, (General Internal Medicine) along with Emory IM residency alumnus, John Johnson, MD, and current School of Medicine student, Tuzo Mwarumba (all shown above).

The event was very well attended by our Emory community. We were also honored to have Dr. Holmes' wife and daughter, Mrs. Marilyn Holmes and Alison Holmes Johnson (shown left with Kimberly Manning, MD), in attendance, as well as Marion Hood, MD (shown right with Mrs. Marilyn Holmes). Dr. Hood applied to Emory School of Medicine in 1959 and was rejected on the basis of race. He went on to medical school at Loyola University Chicago and served as an OBGYN for over 45 years. In 2021, Emory held an event to officially apologize to Dr. Hood and to allow others to hear his story of resilience and tenacity.

Emory University’s Human Resouces announces new diversity, equity, and inclusion resources

Emory University’s Human Resources Diversity and Inclusion, Education and Outreach (DIEO) team announces a new, dedicated set of resources on the topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • The DIEO team develops and facilitates diversity, equity, and inclusion trainings for Emory University employees to help employees learn more about the many areas of diversity, as well as how to practice allyship and facilitate inclusion. Trainings are offered at least once per quarter, and dates are announced at the beginning of each new quarter.
  • Emory University's new Brainier learning management system (which has replaced the former system, ELMS), hosts a robust set of virtual, on-demand trainings on a wide range of topics. Brainier is an excellent resource for you and your team on topics related to DEI and beyond.
  • The Manager’s Guide to Inclusion is a toolkit to help Emory leaders understand how to create psychological safety and inclusion with their staff and provides links to internal resources to help leaders with inclusion efforts. These have been crafted with leaders in mind, both for your development, as well as to support you as people leaders.
  • Finally, be sure to visit the Diversity and Inclusion, Education and Outreach webpage. This resource is available to you 24/7. You’ll find information on the DIEO team, the educational resources they offer, and even a custom “Training Request Form” to request dedicated DEI sessions for your team.

The DIEO team is here as a resource to you as you continue in your journey! If you have questions, please reach out to us at dieo@emory.edu.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion competency performance rating

These new DEI resources, as well as involvement with RYSE or volunteering for RYSE events such as Health Equity Day, can help meet the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, (DEI) Competency, This DEI competency was added in 2023 as one of the eight competencies used to evaluate employee performance.

According to the Emory University Human Resources Performance Management Competencies page, the DEI competency requires that Emory University employees demonstrate they pursue knowledge and display a self-awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and related social issues. Employees should seek personal development opportunities in DEI, adopt or modify operational practices to help ensure diversity, equity and/or inclusion, and actively address or make known issues of inequity and bias whenever possible.

New for 2024 performance management: the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Competency will have a numerical performance rating which, according to the performance management policy, will be a major consideration in matters concerning employee development, promotion, transfer, retention, salary, and performance improvement. The new DEI resources above, as well as involvement with RYSE, can demonstrate your competency in this area.
