Three Minute Thesis

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a national competition that challenges Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students to effectively explain their research to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes. The aim is to cultivate their academic, presentation, and research communication skills while celebrating the exciting research conducted by HDR students across the country.

Participating in the 3MT will not only help you learn to articulate your research concisely but also communicate your work to a non-expert audience, build your confidence in public speaking, crystallise your research and write your thesis, increase your research profile, grow your network within the University and beyond. And you might even win a prize!

All participants qualify for 5 CaRST points.

For more information, visit the University of Adelaide 3MT website.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Information Session

When: 22 May 2025, 11:00am - 12:00pm
Credits: 1 credit, Domain D
Delivery mode: Zoom webinar

Can you sell your thesis in just 3 minutes? The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an annual skills development activity that challenges Higher Degree by Research students to explain their research project to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes using a single PowerPoint slide. It is not an exercise in trivialising or ‘dumbing-down’ research; the oration should engage the audience without reducing research to entertainment value alone. This information session will provide information on the rules and requirements of the competition, the competition format and how to successfully sell your thesis in 3 minutes! For more information, refer to the University of Adelaide 3MT website. Register here.

Working with Your Supervisor (Faculty of HMS)

When: 28 May 2025, 10:00am - 12:00pm
Credits: 2 credits, Domain D
Delivery mode: In-person

This version of the Working with Your Supervisor workshop is intended for the Faculty of HMS. Additional in-person workshops for the other Faculties will be held later this year. Follow the registration link below for more information.

The relationship you have with your supervisor is crucial in determining your PhD experience. They are your primary source of guidance as you undertake an individual research project and even the best student/supervisor relationships can experience periods of strain through the ups and downs of research. Undertaking a PhD is also very different from other types of study so it can be difficult to know what to expect from the supervisory relationship. In this workshop you will learn what you can do to establish a positive working relationship with your supervisor and ultimately get the most out of your HDR experience. Register here.

Preparing for the 3MT: Everything you need to know

Credits: 2.5 credits, Domain D
Delivery mode: Zoom webinar

This workshop explains what the 3MT is and how it works. It describes the judging criteria and provides strategies and suggestions to help you win over the judging panel. You will discover how to make your presentation stand out and be memorable, how to prepare and practice, what to do on the day itself, and importantly, strategies to cope with the inevitable anxiety. The workshop is designed for any research student who is thinking of participating in the 3MT competition and includes a set of tools you can use to help you prepare for the 3MT. Register here.
