Bishop's Homily for the Thirtieth Sunday of Ordinary Time

[St. Elizabeth Church, Aiea (with Missionary Families of Christ); St. Anthony Church, Wailuku (175th Anniversary of St. Anthony School)]
As you know, the Hawaiian word for “house” is “hale;” and the Hawaiian word for “prayer” is “pule.” Therefore, “hale pule” means “house of prayer,” or “church.” An evangelical minister, who is a friend of mine, is promoting a very good movement called: Every hale a hale pule. (Every house a house of prayer.) It is an attempt to bring the family together in regular prayer, not only for its own strengthening, but as a service to the wider community as well.
This is a great vision, since it can open the eyes of family members to each other. They may not be physically blind, but sometimes blindness is caused by too much time focusing on a computer screen and not enough on another person; or some hurt that occurred in the family may cause the eyes to glaze over, so that people cease to really see one another. Or sheer busyness can blind us to one another in the family. Read more...

Restoring Communion from the Cup
|

*This memo had been shortened to fit into the eNews. To read Bishop Silva's full memo, click "read more" below.*
From: Bishop Larry Silva
Date: October 26, 2024
Subject: Holy Communion as the Precious Blood (Communion from the Cup)
Since the pandemic, some parishes have restored the practice of offering the Blood of the Lord to the faithful at every Mass, while others have not done so.
While we do believe that a communicant receives the entire Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ by receiving Communion under either species, it is a fuller sign of the sacrament to offer the Precious Blood to those who choose to partake of it. It is a sign the Lord himself instituted as a memorial of his offering his Body and pouring out his Blood on the cross for our salvation.
I therefore would like to ask all pastors to prepare for offering the Communion cup to the faithful in their parishes. For some, this might take some organizing and training. The faithful should also be catechized about the fact that the Lord intended his sacrament of love to be given under both species, even though the full Christ is received under one species only. And all should be reminded that, after the consecration, we never refer to the contents of the chalice as “wine,” but rather as “the Precious Blood” of the Lord.
I ask that every parish that has not already done so offer the Communion cup to all the faithful no later than Ash Wednesday, March 5, 2025. Thank you for your cooperation!

Reclaiming Halloween

Halloween displays don’t have to be spooky. Outside Rosary Preschool in Waipio, pumpkins and cartoon characters reflect a happier message. (Celia K. Downes / Hawaii Catholic Herald)
By Jennifer Rector
Hawaii Catholic Herald
When it comes to Halloween, haunted houses, ghosts and pumpkins are just a few things that come to mind.
Dressing up in costume is a hallmark of the day, whether it’s as a favorite character or a more sinister image.
Even stores feed into the celebration by setting up spooky decorations and filling aisles with candy for trick-or-treating, masks, costumes and a wide array of adornments for both body and home.
Certainly, Catholics should have nothing to do with this sort of holiday that invites fear and thrills — or is it in fact OK? Read more...

A Faithful Citizen’s Guide to Voting in Hawaii
|
|
|
(Joaquin Corbalan P / Shutterstock.com)
By Eva Andrade
Special to the Herald
Voting is not only a civic duty but, as Catholics, a responsibility to engage in the electoral process with a heart aligned to our faith. The document “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship” issued by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops calls it a “moral obligation.” (FC#13)
With Hawaii being a mail-in ballot state, it’s essential to understand how to register, vote and make informed choices that reflect both our values and the well-being of our communities.
Hawaii conducts elections entirely by mail, ensuring that every registered voter receives a ballot at home. Voting by mail provides the convenience of praying, reflecting and researching before casting your vote. Read more...

St. Marianne, An Example of True Aloha

From the Office for Social Ministry
“At a time when little could be done for those suffering from this terrible disease, Marianne Cope showed the highest love, courage and enthusiasm. She is a shining energetic example of the spirit of her beloved Saint Francis.” Pope Benedict XVI Canonization of St. Marianne Cope of Molokai’i 10/21/2012
St. Marianne of Moloka’i lived her life as a prayer giving thanks to God by encountering and imitating Christ through serving with the most vulnerable. This October, we celebrate the 12th anniversary of her canonization on Mission Sunday, October 21, 2012. This was a special prayerful moment during the Synod on New Evangelization, when more than 80,000 pilgrims from around the world—including nearly 300 from Hawaii—gathered in Rome to honor seven new “missionary” saints recognized for witnessing to Jesus by their love of God through action. Known as “Mother to Outcasts,” St. Marianne evangelized the way St. Francis said: “Preach the Gospel at all times; and use words if necessary.” Read more...

Decree Concerning the 2024 Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception
|
|
| |
From Most Reverend Clarence (Larry) Silva
Bishop of Honolulu
General Decree Concerning the 2024 Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
While this very important celebration is usually on December 8, since that is a Sunday of Advent this year, all the Masses for December 7/8 must be for the Second Sunday of Advent. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is transferred to Monday, December 9. Although the Paulist Press Ordo says it is not a day of obligation this year, in order to give due honor to our national patroness, and since the Diocese of Honolulu only observes this Solemnity and the Solemnity of Christmas as holy days of obligation, I hereby decree that the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is to be celebrated on Monday, December 9, 2024, as a HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION in the Diocese of Honolulu. Pastors are to schedule Masses so that all may observe this holy day of obligation and to publicize that it is a holy day of obligation well in advance of December 9. Any Vigil Mass celebrated
on Sunday, December 8 is to be a Mass for the Second Sunday of Advent, not for the Immaculate Conception.
This decree is to be promulgated as law through publication in the Hawaii Catholic Herald and in the diocesan eNews.
Given at the Office of the Bishop on September 26, 2024.

Saint of the Week
Saints Simon and Jude
First Century
Feast – October 28
Today, the Church honors Saints Simon and Jude, two of the Twelve Apostles chosen by our Lord. They were two of the first bishops through whom our Lord established His Church and from whom every bishop, priest, and deacon is a spiritual descendant.
Very little is known about these two Apostles, other than what is briefly mentioned about them in the New Testament, and even that is a little confusing. They are both listed among the Twelve whom Jesus names Apostles. Read more...
