Marsy's Law for Wisconsin and New Horizons Shelter & Outreach Centers are partnering up to display silhouettes at the La Crosse County Courthouse on Wednesday, July 27 to help raise awareness of crime victims’ rights in Wisconsin. The silhouettes will highlight various rights included under Wisconsin’s crime victims’ rights constitutional amendment known as Marsy’s Law. The silhouette’s powerful imagery reminds our community that victims and survivors of crime walk among us relatively unseen. Sierra Lyon, the New Horizon development coordinator and Nela Kalpic of Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin, will both be available for interviews on July 27 upon request. WHAT: WHEN: WHERE: CONTACT: ###
About Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin is a grassroots coalition that championed a unique proposal to give victims of crime equal rights in our state, building on Wisconsin’s laws and history of leading on this issue. The crime victims’ rights state constitutional amendment, also known as Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin, was ratified during the April 7, 2020 election with an overwhelming 75 percent of voters in support. Marsy’s Law is named after Marsalee “Marsy” Nicholas of California who was stalked and killed by her ex-boyfriend in 1983. Only one week after her death, Marsy’s mother and brother, Henry T. Nicholas, walked into a grocery store where they were confronted by the accused murderer. The family, who had just come from a visit to Marsy’s grave, was unaware that the accused had been released on bail. In an effort to honor his sister, Dr. Nicholas has made it his life’s mission to give victims and their families constitutional protections and equal rights. About New Horizons Shelter and Outreach Centers New Horizons Shelter and Outreach Centers is the only shelter within a 65-mile radius of the City of La Crosse. It’s a shelter for individuals and families who have experienced domestic and sexual abuse, was organized in 1978 through the cooperative efforts of an informal group of citizens in the La Crosse area who recognized the need for services to victims of domestic abuse. The organization and mission has grown substantially since that time, now reaching out to victims of sexual abuse, human-trafficking, and more. New Horizons is on the front lines advocating for and helping victims with many issues that some people may think do not exist in our community. |
