No images? Click here Message from the Executive PrincipalKia ora koutou, good afternoon, Finally, we've had a full week in school! This week, there has been a buzz of activity as our co-curricular program has really kicked into gear, providing the students with meaningful engagement both in and out of the classroom. Last night was a particularly proud moment for us, as we watched our top scholars receive the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards. Douglas Lindsay (class of 2023 and Top of the World for A Level English) was the student speaker, offering deep insights into his journey through Pinehurst and the Cambridge curriculum. Michael Ma, Jason Wang, Kelly Liu, Emma Liang, and Ava Tillick also received Top in the World Awards, an incredible achievement. Alongside them, a further 13 students were recognized. At the College assembly, I emphasized that while these are individual accolades, they also reflect the nurturing environment we all contribute to and I hope all our students share in the sense of pride I felt last night. This morning, I had the pleasure of visiting our Year 3 students at Camp Maynard. It was wonderful to see them take on challenges in activities new to them as part of their first school camp. This trip serves as an excellent introduction to our outdoor education program, with its impact clearly visible even at such a young age. The camaraderie and resilience displayed by the students underscore the value of these experiences. A heartfelt thank you to our parent helpers and, as always, to our staff who consistently go above and beyond for our students. I also had the opportunity to address our Primary School assembly on Tuesday, sharing the message of always doing your best. I encouraged them to reflect on one thing they could improve upon that day and to act on it that afternoon. It's important that we take action on our ideas to foster personal growth. Yesterday, you should have received an email detailing a change in our process for reporting student absences. If you haven't yet read that message, please do so. It's vital that we are able to accurately account for all our students in a timely manner. Next week, we are eagerly anticipating a special concert featuring Reynold Yang. Many of you have enjoyed Reynold's clarinet performances, and this concert promises to be a highlight of our Arts calendar. Further details, along with an outline of other upcoming events, are shared below. A significant aspect of our well-being comes from maintaining a healthy, balanced diet. While occasional treats are enjoyable, I often observe snacks and lunches that are excessively high in sugar. I encourage you to discuss with your child the importance of balancing carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. If you encounter resistance, please reach out to your child's teacher or mentor, who can help reinforce this message. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. Best wishes, Mike Waller Dates for your DiaryMonday 19 February

Message from the Principal of CollegeTēnā koutou katoa Last week ended on a high note with an excellent Inter-House Athletics Day on Friday. The Millennium Institute was alive with activity as Year 7-13 students competed in track and field events throughout the day. There was fantastic participation and effort from our students, and they were wonderful ambassadors for our school demonstrating exemplary behaviour. There are still swimming sports events to be held this term at which House points will be awarded. Thank you to all parents of Year 9 students who attended the Year 9 Information Evening on Tuesday. Whilst many of our families are well versed with the way we do things at Pinehurst, there are always questions as students transition from one part of the school to another. If you were unable to attend the evening, we have shared the presentation and would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Please do get in touch at any time. Ms Ridler, forty-one students and five teachers set off for the Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park yesterday so that students could complete their Duke of Edinburgh silver qualifying adventurous journey. The group will complete a three-day tramp carrying all the gear needed for overnight camps and food and water for the three days, returning to school on Saturday. Year 7 and 8 student leaders were acknowledged in their assembly yesterday afternoon. We have strong leaders across the College, and we are looking forward to supporting them in their leadership journey as we move through the school year. Yesterday evening I was delighted to attend the Cambridge Outstanding Learner Awards along with Mr Waller, Mr Wiggin, award winning students and their families. Cambridge awarded Pinehurst School students with twenty-two Outstanding Cambridge Learner awards from the 2023 examination sessions. This was a wonderful event held at Auckland Grammar School and Douglas Lindsay gave an excellent speech. As I mentioned in my first newsletter of the term, Reynold Yang has been accepted into the Royal College of Music and will be starting his music studies there in September. We are delighted for Reynold and very excited that he will hold a concert for us in the theatre next week. Reynold is an outstanding musician and I am looking forward to hearing him perform on Wednesday. Also next week, we are looking forward to hosting an orienteering event at Pinehurst and to our inter-house swimming competition for Years 9-13 students on Thursday. I hope you have a lovely weekend. Ngā mihi nui Dawn College NewsCollege Inter-House AthleticsLast Friday the College headed off to the AUT Millennium Athletics park for the annual Year 7-13 Inter-House Athletics Day. The day was action packed with great participation from everyone on the day, and it was awesome to see the encouragement and team spirit coming from both students and staff. Congratulations to our Record Breakers and overall winners. Year 7 FUNdamentals TestingAfter a very successful full college sports day, the Year 7s are moving onto testing their FUNdamental skills. They will be going through a multitude of throwing, catching and striking tests in order to provide an accurate and consistent baseline. This data will provide the PE team with a valuable understanding of the level of the current year 7s, so that support can be tailored to specific needs, and can be used as a reference to show their progression over a year of specialised PE lessons. Young Enterprise Kickstart EventA dynamic assembly of students in Year 11 - 13 attended the kickstart event organised by the Young Enterprise Scheme at Massey University's Albany Campus. During the event, they gained insights into the advantages of the scheme, such as broadening their personal networks and tackling challenges specifically crafted to impart the skills of initiating and managing a business. Engaging with a successful entrepreneur, the students posed thoughtful questions and explored products created by their peers in previous years. With this valuable experience under their belts, these students are now primed and eager to take on the responsibilities that come with being business owners. Junior ScienceAll Year 7 and 8 students are currently preparing for the Science Fair. The Science Fair is an event where students showcase their scientific research and experiments to everyone. It is an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and creativity in science. Many Year 7 and 8 students have registered their interests for Science badges. Science badges is run by the New Zealand Science Awards Trust. Students select a topic of Science that interests them. Students will be issued a task booklet that they will need to complete to earn their badge. Senior ScienceYear 10 Chemistry students are doing filtration, evaporation, and crystallization where students learn basic skills relating to the laboratory as forensic investigators. Year 10 Physics students are investigating pendulums and freefall. Year 13 Biology students are measuring gas exchange using as respirometer. Creative Writing ClubMusic Box Man by Michelle Prasetyo, Year 9 The Valentine’s of her dreams, A true gentleman, Perfect- he screams.
Around they dance, Around they go, An incessant trance, She hopes not ends.
Around she went, His rosy cheeks against the sun, The endless haze, Around she spun.
Like a music box, They dance side-by-side, On the docks, By the coarse, summer sand.
But like a music box, Time stops short.
It was all a hoax- The gears come to a halt.
And like a music box, They’re back at the start.
For, like a music box, They lived only to dance.
“The music box man” is all he seems, But he was the valentine in her dreams. Year 7 Social ScienceCurrently, our Year 7 Social Science classes are learning about how early Polynesian settlers had to adjust to life in Aotearoa when they first arrived here. Year 7s here are working in groups to brainstorm ideas about what specific changes Polynesian sailors would have to make to adjust to our colder climates. North Harbour Premium 9-hole Golf CompetitionPerfect conditions on Monday saw Team 1 romp home with a strong win over Westlake Boys 1. The first team rotation saw Captain Lingyao, and teammates Nicole, Sophie and Grace secure low scores at the often-tricky Pupuke Golf Course. The competition is a round robin format for 5 weeks, with winners going on to 18-hole sem-ifinals and finals. Pinehurst 2, lead by captain Sophia J were pipped by a mere 2 shots by Rangitoto 2. Still early days in that competition and we look forward to exciting games next week. Year 10 Global PerspectivesSome of our early Global Perspectives classes have started a little closer to home in Year 10. We have focused on New Zealand. For example, Waitangi Day history and its relevance today. Understanding the significance of the Pinehurst pōwhiri for new staff and students to our school and how it contributes to our feelings of belonging. It has been enlightening discovering just how much there is to learn about the geography, placenames and symbols of some of our smaller towns around the motu. We will then use a wider lens to look at different cultural perspectives as we move through the syllabus. Future focus will be developing individual research skills in order to select and evaluated source material for the Global Research Challenge, so that only reliable, trusted, and credible information is used. Student Leaders show love for Valentines Day ❤️This week the Year 13 Leadership Prefects organised an event selling roses and heart chocolates to raise funds for the Heart Foundation. Roses were able to be delivered to friends, teachers and even secret admirers! On behalf of the Prefect team thank you and we hope everyone had an amazing Valentine's week with all their loved ones! Message from the Principal of PrimaryKia ora, The rain was a surprise this morning maybe because it was our first Hockey training of the year, and we needed the right conditions! It hasn’t stopped us though and everyone just carried on with their day, the last of our first full week of the year and a very busy one too. Year 3 have enjoyed two days at Camp Maynard, their first experience of an off site camp. They were very excited and beaming about the fun things they had been getting up to. The confidence course was a clear winner with most as they wove their way through the bush, climbing under and over obstacles. They experience a range of activities from climbing, walking, camp food , games and bush craft, there is something for everyone and a great introduction to the camps to follow when they get to stay overnight. Well done Year 3 and their teachers and parents, you were brilliant. Year 5 have enjoyed swimming lessons this week and have been developing their skills in the pool. Later this term they will all take part in our swimming gala along with Year 6. Our abilities in swimming have been growing from strength to strength and we are looking forward to another year of success in the pool in North Shore and Auckland competitions. Year 6 are looking forward to Waterwise and learning to sail an optimist boat at Murrays Bay. Our students get fantastic opportunities to experience the outdoors and to challenge themselves past their comfort zones. Last year a group of dedicated staff got together to plan and create opportunities for us all to be more sustainable and to teach students how to take care of the planet. Recycling was a focus as well as reducing waste which had become quite an issue for us as a school. They have plans to continue with the Pinehurst Primary Planet Protectors, a group of dedicated staff and students who are taking the lead in caring for our environment. Next week we will start our sustainability learning with a visit from the Tread Lightly classroom which will be onsite for two weeks. Each class will have lessons on our impact on the environment at an age appropriate level and learn what they can do to reduce, reuse, and recycle in their daily lives. Have a chat with your child as they will no doubt have some handy tips for the home too. We had two events for parents this week, our Meet and Greet plus phonics session for new families and the Year 3 to Year 6 information evenings. Both were well attended, and it was wonderful to see such support from our families along with a chance for parents to connect with each other. There are PowerPoints from the information evenings on Seesaw if you wanted to recap anything spoken about at the sessions. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher. Year 2 are off to Crystal Mountain next week to study rock formations for their Science programme, how exciting! I hope you have a wonderful weekend; it is going to be hot and maybe sunny so might be nice outdoors for a walk in the park or a trip to the beach. Ngā Mihi, Sian Primary NewsYear 6 CampLast week the Year 6 students headed off on a five day, four night camp, at Carey Park. School camp is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop new skills, friendships and interests as well as growing in confidence while becoming more independent. We are sure this camp will be a memorable part of their school life. Carey Park offered a range of indoor and outdoor activities, which were all specifically designed with educational outcomes in mind, as well as incorporating physical and mental growth. Some of the activities that the students experienced were rock climbing, bush walking, archery, a flying fox and orienteering. A highlight of the camp were the camp plays, when the impressed us with their acting and props. The students all pushed themselves beyond their comfort zone and should be very proud of the way the conducted themselves at camp. A massive thank you to all our fantastic parent helpers for their help and efforts at camp, they were all absolutely fabulous. Here’s some of the student feedback: Lara enthusiastically reports, “I had a fantastic time, the slip and slide and the top team activities were the best!” Mikayla adds, “I really appreciated the food, my favourite was the butter chicken.” “The water fights during river games were fun and kept us cool,” Aubrey shares. Kayla says, “Everyone enjoyed the flying fox, especially.” Lucas enjoyed the river games too, he comments, “At the river games my friends sprayed me with one cup of water, so I got revenge, I threw one bucket of water over them! It was the best!” Year 5 Swimming LessonsThis week, Year 5 set off to Northern Arena for swimming lessons! The children were split into small groups and, along with their instructor, have been practicing the vital skills needed to become more confident swimmers. They have been practicing the different strokes and have already shown great improvement! They are looking forward to using these skills for the rest of the summer! Hear from some of the children below on how they found their swimming lessons this week. Gabrina: “Swimming has been really fun because I have made new friends and I am faster now, I can really see an improvement in only three days!” Derek: “In swimming this week, I have learned how to do breaststroke and I think I am much quicker now! When I was underwater, I got more confident when playing the goggle game – you have to dive down to find your goggles at the end of the lesson! It’s pretty fun.” Wawa: “Swimming has been very fun this week and I have learnt a lot that I didn’t know before. I have improved a lot – especially with froggy swimming because my swim teacher said that I’m doing a great job!” Vincent: “I already knew all of the strokes, but some of them I needed practice on. So this week has been good for me, because I feel like I am improving on those strokes, and the bus ride was really fun!” P8 NewsP8 have been busy learning about portraits and using different materials and techniques when making their own. This week the children have explored the work of Pablo Picasso and created artwork inspired by him. The children have used different colours in their portraits to demonstrate their emotions. P13 - Year 4 SwimmingThe weather has definitely been an inspiration as the Year 4 classes attended swimming last week. There were 4 one-hour sessions. The 3 classes were extremely excited to depart school on a double decker bus for the short ride to Northern Arena pools. The instructors were extremely clear with their directions and students were grouped according to their needs. There were plenty of celebrations at the end of swimming, from water confidence to arm strokes, as well as perfecting their breathing technique. Every student was able to share a positive experience about our education outside the classroom. Leslie said that “it was really good but after swimming I was exhausted!” Ashton insisted that swimming was 10/10. Angus thought it was really good but changing out of his wet swimming gear was hard work. Orlando shared that swimming was a lot of fun and he learnt backstroke. Xavier said “I really liked swimming especially the last session because we learned water safety.” Mia told us that it was really good and the best part was falling out of the boat backwards. Celebrating Jack's remarkable swimming achievementsCoast Swim Club member Jack P has had a busy summer and achieved impressive results. He was chosen to represent Swimming New Zealand in two teams. Firstly, he was part of the New Zealand Age Group Team that competed at the Queensland State Champs. Following that, he was selected to represent New Zealand at the NSW Open Water Champs. Jack's performance at these events was outstanding. At the 2023 NSW Open Water Champs, he won a gold medal in the 7.5km race for 16-year-olds. Similarly, at the 2024 NZ Open Water Champs, he secured another gold medal in the same distance category for ages 15-17. These remarkable achievements have earned Jack a spot on the New Zealand team for the 2024 World Junior Open Water Championships in Alghero, Italy this September. Well done Jack! Chantelle C Wins GoldP17 student Chantelle C was invited to participate in the European Classical Music Awards 2024 Grand Prix where she has been awarded:

VEX IQ Robotics Winner - Oscar ZYear 8 student Oscar Z, student at Kidwe Lab, has triumphed in the Vex IQ National Robotics Competition, securing a spot in the World Championship. Oscar and his team will represent New Zealand in Dallas, USA this coming April. Oceania Individual Men's Championships - AustraliaDuring the week, Year 12 student Jack J has been playing badminton against some of Oceania’s best players with a total of 89 men playing in the Oceania Individual Men’s competition in Australia. That is right … Jack is playing in the Oceania Individual Men’s competition as a 16-year-old and the youngest player from New Zealand. Jack had an intense first game against the current U15 Australian Champion … and won. Jack went on to win his next game against his Australian opponent who is in the Australian Men’s National Badminton Squad and who finished 4th in the Senior Australian National Men’s Championship last year. Remember, Jack is only 16 years old, so this was an amazing achievement. Eventually Jack came up against a world ranked men’s players, who has played ‘professionally’ for over 8 years and the effects of two earlier hard-fought successes meant that he lost his match against the professional men’s player in the knock-out competition. Jack is no doubt looking forward to being back in New Zealand and catching up on homework and preparing for assessment tests. Congratulations for representing the youth of NZ and being a role model for other Pinehurst students and badminton players.
